Hello Paul what sort of purchase are you doing? Can you do it online? Otherwise I would ring and do it over the phone, I would not email your cc details at all

I use the credit online with some, Phone, occasionally email or there is paypal. It depends on who you are dealing with. Another option is a prepaid credit card, available from the post office. You only load the card with the amount that is needed.

If your paying on line then most sites use a secure payment method and if it's similar to the banks then it's encrypted.

A lot of banks are now switching to SMS for authorisation purposes and especially for places that you haven't shopped online at before. The sale won't go through unless you enter the code the bank sent you.

I use the phone I if need to get something from my nearest dealer (e.g.) if I can't get over to pick it up and they'll add the postage cost as well.

Some businesses give you a couple of options and you chose the one you feel most comfortable with. If they offer Paypal I'd use that as you have some measure of protection if the goods aren't delivered.

I'd avoid fax and other mail as it can be placed in the rubbish bin and after that.........who knows.

Pay Pal for me, I've used it dozens of times without any problem!  If they don't have Pay Pal and it's a secure site I'll give credit card details, but I'm very very careful who I give it to and always try to make sure there's not much more in the account than necessary.

on line say with david Silver never a problem. paypal the same. I was wondering about those people without credit card system on their web sites. In the past i have sent order by email and then rang later with card numbers, just a bit difficult with my stupid work hours.

Couch is right, Paypal is without doubt the safest way to do it. An alternative for doing on-line shopping is to open a new account, preferably at another bank, pay in whatever you want to risk ($250 - $500 maybe?) and then pay using that account not your real one. Then the biggest risk is within that limited account only.
