Title: Top box - that wont break the bank or start a war!
Post by: nate on February 21, 2014, 02:00:58 PM
Hey all, new the the OzSToc community and for that matter ST owner.  I've not long bought an '97 ST1000 and somehow Shinny tracked me down and suggested I join the community!

Ok, now for the problem.  I've got an RJays top box which is fine, but the carrier rack for it has cracked, not allowing a secure fit.  Last thing I want is for it to bounce off and take out a cager (hmm, maybe not a bad idea!).  Anyway, now looking for alternatives.

Is it worth replacing the top box with another unit or see if I can find a replacement part for the rack?  A new RJay's unit is about $80-$100, but I dont really want a replacement box as thats fine.  Also dont want to start a war with the minister for finance.

Thoughts and suggestions guys?

TIA
Nate

(will be posting intro soon)

Nate, it may be possible to weld the crack, and reinforce the the area. Its a bit hard to tell with out seeing the damage. Also a good excuse to buy that welder that you want need

What is the rack made from? Its quite possible that its repairable.... any pictures of the damage?

I installed one of these top boxes : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Large-Universal-51L-Motorcycle-Scooter-Topbox-Rear-Storage-Luggage-Top-Box-/171002016647?pt=AU_Motorcycle_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27d083b387&_uhb=1 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Large-Universal-51L-Motorcycle-Scooter-Topbox-Rear-Storage-Luggage-Top-Box-/171002016647?pt=AU_Motorcycle_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27d083b387&_uhb=1)

$66 Delivered, I now have two... One on my bike, one of the other half's scooter.. both seem good, and very well built for the price.

Hi Nate,
Welcome to the forum, I've also had a look around and haven't been able to locate a base plate alone for sale :'(
So a repair may be the only option short of buying a whole new topbox for a new base plate.

Maybe just getting a thin flat plate of metal and bolting it to the base plate would be enough to strengthen it?

Anyway Nate, don't forget to introduce yourself to all the guys in the Introduce Yourself & Your Bike (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?board=14.0) section of the forum so everyone can say hi :hatwave
You can also tell them about your overseas motorcycling :thumbsup

Good luck mate

Cheers
Shiney

thanks for the replies guys.  having a think about it, I dont mind leaving the topbox on, so i might just "permenantly" mount it using a bit of plate and a few longer bolts through the existing mounting bracket.  I can always unscrew it if I need to!

Getting to the intro Shinny, one of these days I will take a few moments to write everything up!

cheers!
Nate
