Title: ST1300 Driving Light Mounts
Post by: StinkyPete on February 23, 2014, 10:20:51 PM
This has probably been covered already, but I've not turned up anything useful in a search.    There seem to be driving light mounts available to fit the ST1100, but I've not found any available for the ST1300.   Perhaps those who have fitted  "over mirror"  driving lights to their ST1300's could advise me where they have sourced the light mounts.

The police light mounts are popular, available from various Aust and OS Honda outlets. Prices can vary greatly.

G'Day Pete, just check your state regulations on the Driving Light mounting heights......many limit the mounting height to 1200mm above the ground or no higher than the vehicles standard high beam mounting.

A few have been pinched by the authorities (? State/Territory) but also many many have not had an issue.

There is no doubt that the higher and clearer of body work you mount a driving light the better light usability you have available, just worthy a check if you insist on not flirting with traffic reg's  :wink1

If you choose under mirror I can recommend the MCL under mirror mounts.....some cutting of your underside mirror housing and only mounts on one of the mirror mount bolts.....but rock solid  :thumbsup

Will send you a close up with the mirror off if required......

Cheers

Thanks everyone for the prompt information.  Chirs, I would appreciate a close up photo please, and will check the mounting height issue before going further and report back.  It may influence my choice of MCL Under, or Partzilla Over mounting hardware.  I'm still prevaricating over the selection of lights.   :o

Very strong in construction and no movement/vibration of the light at night.

Thanks Abe, the photos show me what I need to know.     I'm still looking for lights and am considering the Jaycar spotties shown in the link below.
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SL3919 (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SL3919)
They are a compact 120mm dia, 3,400 lumens, and come in either a spot beam or a flood beam.   I'm asking the forum if one spot and one beam, each with 3,400 lumen output, is a viable configuration for night riding.

Abe,

What lights do you have mounted on those?

My reliable source advised that ADR 19 covers driving lights.    They cannot be higher than 1200mm, cannot be lower that 500mm, and cannot be higher than the main light or lights.    Fog lights cannot be mounted more than 250mm off the ground.  Thus driving lights on the ST can't be mounted over the mirrors, but must be below the mirrors to comply with ADR19.

That's the way I would go.
-------------------------------------------
Nothing in the following link says anything about heights

http://www.sa.gov.au/topics/transport-travel-and-motoring/motoring/vehicles-and-registration/vehicle-standards-and-modifications/lighting-and-instrumentation (http://www.sa.gov.au/topics/transport-travel-and-motoring/motoring/vehicles-and-registration/vehicle-standards-and-modifications/lighting-and-instrumentation)

You may fit up to a maximum of four additional lights, in pairs, provided the lights show a white beam only.

Lights fitted must not affect the driver's view and must be mounted symmetrically. Additional driving lights must extinguish automatically when low beam is selected.

All driving lights and headlamps must be mounted at the front of the vehicle.

---------------------------------------

and this one just gives  a minimum height above the ground. Above or below mirrors would appear to be ok.

http://www.sa.gov.au/topics/transport-travel-and-motoring/motoring/motorcycling/motorcycles/motorcycles-and-sidecar-requirements#title19 (http://www.sa.gov.au/topics/transport-travel-and-motoring/motoring/motorcycling/motorcycles/motorcycles-and-sidecar-requirements#title19)

Headlamps

A motorcycle must be fitted with at least one headlamp.

If two or more headlamps are fitted they must be mounted in one of these ways:
•in pairs at least 500 mm from the ground
•centrally with one above the other
•side by side symmetrically about the centre-line of the motorcycle.

Chris and I have the same HID (ebay) Euro (nearside) and Spot (offside) both fitted with 4300K globes, and when you turn them off, you would think your using candles as headlights.

These are the one's:-

The HIDs are a very cost effective solution.  Best bang for the buck. The only disadvantage is that they can take a little while to come back up to full power if you are going back to low beam for oncoming traffic then back to high beam. If done within say 20 to 30 seconds hardly any lag, and even in startup phase the HIDs are equal to or are better than the standard H4 high beams.

The other disadvantage is that standard headlights will never be good enough again!  Some H4s +100 or +120 make things more bearable from the headlight, but a pair of those bulbs cost nearly as much as the HID driving lights.

I rode with someone else who  had what looked like the setup I have on the ST1100, looks exactly like the link Abe posted, but startup time was noticeably less on his. Mine were a few years older, so perhaps tha ballasts are better now.

Pete,

As far as Spot & Spread the Euro beam falls between the two but closer to a spread......for my style of riding in the terain that we mostly encounter of a night time I would be more than happy with 2 x Euro beams in my current HID setup.

We tend to ride in areas where the road side tree line comes close to the road or at least to the fence line a few metres off the roads edge, its also undulating terrain with minimal long straights.....in addition I travel within my reaction time of my forward vision ahead, so its the roo that comes across from the dark edge of the road that I wish to see....not the 1 standing 900 metres up the road scratching his nurries.

Although we could have spent more money for better quality in regards lighting......the $90 a pair 4" 55W 4300k Combo pair are perfect for the couple of hours in the dark every few months we use them.

If you go HID as aposed to LED do some research on Kelvin ratings from your old camera days......4300K would give you the lighting you are looking for without the glare back from newer road signes that higher K ratings can......8000K and above are just for the rice burners in their doof doof cars for the look at me effect !!!

Dont forget the LED's Pete I put on - Instant light and great spread. People notice when you flash to warn the ones coming out of side streets as the light is instantaneous  :thumb
