Went for a car drive yesterday, came to a round about and saw a bike down on the side of the road. Pulled up to help a fellow rider and found the rider of a sports bike had hit a streak of diesel on the round about and come off. Someone stayed with the bike while I took the rider to a nearby medical centre (closed) then to the base hospital. I arranged for his bike to be picked up, and dropped his helmet and keys off at his house and sent his flatmate (roommate?) to check on him at the hospital.
He was wearing thongs on his feet, short pants, short-sleeved shirt, helmet and no gloves. While the bicycle rider who saw the accident and pulled up to help said he was only doing about 40 km/hr when he came off, he had some pretty nasty injuries.
Palms badly torn, elbow abraded, thigh abraded, knee abraded to the kneecap, calf ripped and toes mangled. He was in a lot of pain, kept in hospital over night and won't be back at work for a fair few weeks.
Please consider what you wear when you get on your bike, even if going 5 minutes down the road to buy a bottle of milk. A pair of Draggin jeans are a good investment, gloves and boots an imperative, a jacket pretty good insurance. And please protect the most important part of your body, spend some money on a good helmet.
This was only a low speed off, and while his injuries weren't life threatening he probably wouldn't have even been hurt if wearing ATGATT.

It's not hard to at least attempt to keep yourself safe by wearing all the gear :||||

When I was living in Ayr ( 1hr sth of Townsville ) a couple of years back, I travelled up every couple of weeks and the number or boardies, singlet and thongs riding sports bikes mystified me. It was definitely hot, but couldn't bring myself to ride without long pants and a jacket. The roads were generally in reasonable condition but the gravel rash would have hurt like hell. Hope it isn't too late when they wake up to themselves.

Well done for helping out Old Steve :thumbsup..........something I'm sure we'd all do if we found ourselves in the same position!
I can never understand riders who ride without protective clothing, I wouldn't ride around the corner without donning all the clobber, not that I ever just ride around the corner I should add, if I'm out on the bike then it's for a decent ride and not just to pick up the bread and milk! Maybe next time he climbs aboard a bike he'll think twice about what he's wearing! :grin

Yes - Well done Steve.
I'm sure we've all ridden a motorcycle missing some of the gear at sometime, mostly in our youth. ST demographics would suggest we are a little older and hopefully wiser. Almost everything I do now on a bike is different to 20 years ago.
Always ATGATT now - the last time I rode without gloves was when I dropped the bike in a lesson in 1991. I think I'd rather break a leg than lose the palms again.

Coming back from Caldermede the other weekend from a RTE the temp hit 47 degrees... So on the freeway I took off a glove hoping for some relief... Gotta say it was hotter without the glove on. The breeze coming thought the vents on the gloves was actually cooling my hands down more

I cannot imagine riding without ATGATT. I see all kinds in thongs and T shirts - and it saddens me!

I have seen a few riders lately with the Sorts, T shirt and runners riding around. Latest was on a new Hayabusa. And all those girls wearing nothing much on scooters worry me - and normally I would quite like that :thumb but not on a scooter :eek

That's because the sweat was contained and allowed to evaporate slowly, giving you steady cooling.
With a full breeze on the hand the sweat was barely allowed to surface before being swept away in the breeze.

I was just about to post the same image. ANY de-gloving situation is not nice, and this is as nasty as anyone would ever like to come across. Amazing what they can do with grafts, but I'd prefer to not have to rely on the skill of a surgeon to put my foot back together, never the mind the pain and downtime....

And if your injury is not this bad, but you have asphalt in your wound, they use a stainless steel wire brush to clean it.
It's not rocket science. Wear your PPE.
