Title: PR4s hit the road!
Post by: Biggles on April 08, 2014, 11:50:17 AM
I've just replaced my PR3s with the latest and greatest.

I got 24,500  kays from the rear and 27,000 from the front, so I'm hooked.
The pair cost $460 fitted, up from $440 for the PR3s.

With all the palaver about wear on the RH side because of road camber, my front hit the wear bars on the left first.  I do wonder whether the fact my ST13 wants to turn right if you take your hands off the bars means there's always a slight left turn happening at the road.

Whatever, I'm happy with every aspect of the Michelins.

Sweet - would love to hear a quick performance appraisal/comparison to PR3 when you can.

Cheers, Diesel

My first observation is the tread is deeper that I remember the PR3s being.  It's also "coarser" or "blockier" than the finer pattern of the PR3s.  Around town they feel like they want to get out of town and get serious about cornering at proper speeds.

Can't wait to see them and hear about them.

I've heard W.A. is expensive.  It's obvious that you have all made so much money out of mining that it has forced up prices.

Maybe when they get to the next rally they can take advantage of the cheaper prices????????????? More of a reason to be there??????????

Just a thought. :eek :grin :wht11

15 to 17,000kms from a set of tyres is the best I have ever gotten on the ST1100, including some PR2s.  I will see how the PR3s go, as the benchmark on the Trophy is 11,700 from the Angel STs.

I may throw some $ at you for postage if you are serious ...  i found them at Jake Wilson after Turtle tipped me in that direction ...

Edit ...  i just went and quadruple checked and looks like they don't do the front in 18"  (120/70 ZR 17 only) (At jakewilson)
Edit 2 ...   Just looked on michelin website and they do say 120/70 18 available in GT

Brock ....  how would this affect my speedo going slightly smaller diameter?? It already reads 1km/hr less than actual speed .... so effectively i am always speeding .... like duh ...  :o

I have the 120/70 18 PR3 fitted to my bike.

What do you mean slightly smaller diameter??? you wont get a 17" tyre on a 18 rim...

I spoke to that local tyre shop and he told me $25 each to fit ...  still better than the others anyway and he has been highly recommended by a certain turtle....
What size did you find the front tyre in on JW?

:well
I meant the 120/70 18 vs 110/80 18...  actually that is slightly larger overall diameter isn't it ....  my bad ...

The 110/80 would be about 8mm greater in circumference, so the bike would indicate slightly lower. ie:- closer to true speed. (I think)

Biggles,

How is the handling with the new tyres compared to the old PR 3's?
One of the first things coming up for my new ST is the tyres and the Michelins are top of the list.(it currently has Bridgestones)

Cheers

This lets you directly compare relative differences http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-comparison/ (http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-comparison/)

Speed reading is not that great, but I have found that different brands in different sizes do vary a little from the mathematical calculations. Rear tyre size change makes more difference to revs at the same speed compared to the front.

The 110/80 would be about 8mm greater in circumference, so the bike would indicate slightly lower. ie:- closer to true speed. (I think)

STranger got a rear PR4 fitted after Ballarat , I took him for a sedate ride to wear of the wax, then on juST my short 360k  ride to doom FR#30 :fp I put the PR4 into some shall I say fun twiSTies an the Putty Rd. I was impressed ,it sticks well and feels like its stuck down. Singleton end the rd was wet and the rear hit paint, slipped til the tar then juST STuck, :runyay which gave me more confidence for the 35k  bends ahead. :like I like PR4's  ++ ++

So the PR4s are built to grip better in the dry (more "edge" area) and perhaps a little less in the wet, but should give more kays (new centre compound).
Still good for all sealed road conditions.

After watching the video and reading the blurb underneath, it would appear that the wet grip has improved??

I usually give them a good clean all around the walls and tread before going for a ride.  Must've been in a hurry to post that day.     :p
