Title: Riding to Nebo - Any advice
Post by: jf3000 on May 02, 2014, 01:47:41 PM
So in a few weeks I am leaving good old Brisbane and heading to Hervey Bay, but before I leave I have been checking out Mt Nebo and wanted any advice if heading in that direction is a good ride, plus also what is out there and if you can actually ride out there lol.

Cheers

You get onto the Nebo road from Waterworks Road, as you can see on Google. It quickly becomes an excellent biker's road with almost continuous bends.  There's a bit of 80 kph but it's mostly 60 or advisory down to 20.  When it advises 20, do 20 if you're still getting the hang of the ST.  There have been rider fatalities on that road.  The surface is quite good.  There are two coffee shops at the Nebo township.  Stop at the eastern one.  The next one is really a poor excuse for a cafe.  The road goes on out to Mt Glorious and over the back down to Somerset Dam.  The back of Glorious is very twisty with several tight hairpins.  The tricky section is 60 kph.  A few kays before the Mt Glorious township there is a right turn down to Samford.  Again, very twisty with some hairpins going down.
It's listed among the 10 top mountain rides in Oz in some places.  The road surface on the east of Mt Glorious is the best.  On the western side it can suffer from leaf litter.  There are 3 coffee shops on Mt Glorious, the Maiala being the fave.  All those roads are popular at weekends with the lycra loonies, and one m/c rider had a head-on collision with an out-of-control cyclist which ended badly for both.

Sounds like an awesome ride for one I must do. Will have to plan this ride in a few weeks maybe. But thank you very much for your useful tips.

Ah, Mount Nebo.

I thought you meant Nebo on the Peak Downs Highway and all I could think was "WHY?"

Nice pub lunch, but there must be better 1000 km trips from Brissie.

I rode Mt Nebo a coupla weeks ago and can say to you to be 'cautious'. I tend to like faster, flowing curves as opposed to 300 hairpins in a row, but it certainly lifts your control and rider craft. For me, the most fun on this section is when you get through this, through Mt Glorious, and open out on to the base of it and Slip Yard Creek Road - you'll see what I mean.
Small warning if doing Nebo on a weekend is watch out for oncoming traffic using YOUR LANE or dropping a couple of wheels over your side of the line to take the 'racing line'.
Otherwise - enjoy!    :thumbsup
Hope this helps

Cheers, Diesel

Add another warning- the Fernvale Cop camps on the Splityard Creek road for the sole purpose of social conversations with motorcyclists.  He tends to talk more than listen.
