Pockey complained on our recent ride that the Armour (foam :whistle) in the hips of her DriRider textile pants were crumpled and irritating her. On removal the hip Armour is just a 7mm piece of medium density foam, shaped so in can bend with the hip joint.
The pic shows the current foam on the right and its state after about 10,000 k's.....it crumples up in its pocket and is mostly useless and very irritating......so in the same pic the trial solution, this is part a foam camping tile that many of us have used for all manner of camping uses, it's 13mm thick and has an increased density compared to the original.......while its no Dainese brand quality of Armour it's better than the original and was free. :hatwave
Cut the mat to same as the original and put a cut in the rear to allow the joint to hinge with the wearer.....
The mat's are about $6 each at camp shops if you had to buy one and would make 10 of these.......so impressed with the outcome have made them for my Textile pants too :popcorn

This then got me thinking about the back protector Armour in our Jackets......we had always planned to upgrade our back armour but like most people didn't...... :whistle
So on investigation to upgrade ours for our 4 Jackets to CE level 2 Armour or equivalent was going to cost about $400......as we needed 4 protectors as the jackets take differing shapes etc.......can you put a price on safety ?? Of course not.....but I have here at the moment a friends BMW Motard riding gear and had a look at the Motard back protector......looked at the density, construction and how it was a laminated arrangement. :think1
So our with my shed mate Stanley and another piece of high density camping mat, a hot glue gun and the foam protector from each jacket.......cut the foam mat 1cm smaller all round than the original, glued down the middle to allow the foam to flex around the torso and with the lighter, softer original against your back the jacket feels no different to wear :thumbsup
Does this replace CE level 2 Armour ?? NO WAY !! But is it better than the original that most of us never change out :think1 Well I think it has to be :OldMan
