Title: GIVI topbox mounted
Post by: Wombat on June 05, 2014, 07:15:19 PM
This is an old farkle. I went into the wrong bike shop  :fp after a new topbox and was told they dont sell them but they had a second hand one for $50.  :runyay That will do me but I had to fit it. The following is the way I went about it. First step was to disinfect it because it had that drug lab delivery smell to it.  :eek :eek I used a packet of carb soda and about a gallon of vinegar so I could handle it.  :crazy

Next was to get a piece of 6mm Ali and shape it to the same size as the baseplate

(http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/ad257/surveywa/Bike%20Modifications/Givi%20Topbox/SAM_0841_zpsbdf943ad.jpg) (http://s941.photobucket.com/user/surveywa/media/Bike%20Modifications/Givi%20Topbox/SAM_0841_zpsbdf943ad.jpg.html)

Bolt the Ali to the bike by using the four grip rail bolts on top. Then bolt the baseplate onto that.

Then just slip the topbox on and off using the key. I have added a brake light ($3 jobby delivered) and internal led lights

(http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/ad257/surveywa/Bike%20Modifications/Givi%20Topbox/SAM_0757_zpsc091a5c6.jpg) (http://s941.photobucket.com/user/surveywa/media/Bike%20Modifications/Givi%20Topbox/SAM_0757_zpsc091a5c6.jpg.html)

The LED strip was about $8 for 5m from memory. Just put a 4 point plug on and this can be disconnected when I remove the topbox when I go 5 star camping

Nice work  :thumbs

I made a plate for mine the other week out of 10mm aluminum, to minimise the topbox movement and it did :runyay

Also, doing a grab handle bolt up that the Honda had just sitting there  :fp helped a lot as well.

Replacing missing bolts on the subframe and fixing the subframe cracked though helped mine from wobbling.

All very nice, Wombat, but how do you cut 6mm ally?  Would be tedious with a hacksaw.

Nice work, Wombat - picked up a bargain and used your "Master of Measurement" skills to create the baseplate - and I am also interested in the cutter used.

Sorry for the late reply but the Ali plate was cut by my Daughters boyfriend trying to be in favour however I normally use a jigsaw with fine blade  :grin

Firstly- keep him guessing for as long as possible!!  Especially if he has access to a laser cutter.    :wink1

Secondly- I take it that's an electric jigsaw with a high tooth/inch steel blade.  Sounds like it would be pretty slow going.
