Title: Back after 30 years - Northern Rivers
Post by: Sandman on June 09, 2014, 02:36:14 PM
Hi there, I'm back after a 30 year layoff, 2 marriages, 4 children and working on my golf game. I work overseas and I'm in Oz for a week every 3 wks. Looking for a ride during the week when I'm in town. Have thought about joining Ulysses. Any comments.

Welcome Sandman,

I'm a Ulysses member as are quite a few in this group. I tend to ride with Ulysses or SES mates more than ST Owners as there are only a couple of us in Cairns.

Where are you located?

Welcome sandman! Ulysses can vary depending on your local branch, but well worth trying as plenty of social events. Ozstoc is gradually increasing numbers up that way, against the flow of the cane toads spreading from the North. Watch out for southern queensland and northern NSW events.

Thank you all.
I ride an 1100. Picked up a bargain. It's done 150,000 but I had it checked out and it runs well. I work overseas and I'm home for 1 week every 3 so the rides will have to fit into the schedule. I also have 2 young boys and weekends are still taken up with sport (I'm not complaining), I love to watch them play ... Field Hockey is strong on the Tweed Border.
I'll keep an eye out for rides.
I noticed that there is a joining fee for Ulysses. Can anyone tell me if that is for a Branch or can you ride with any branch once you area a Ulysses member?
Thanks again to everyone for the welcome.
I'd also like to do an advanced handling course. The ST1100 is the biggest bike I've riden. I'm handling it ok but I'd like some professional tips.
I've heard Mt Cotton (Sth of Brisbane) is pretty good. Anyone know anything about them? Any recommendations?
thanks again

Membership for Ulysses is for the national organisation.  You get access to the website, magazines etc etc, as well as being able to go to the AGMs.

Thank you all.

And, you can ride with any.every branch in the area you want, including Europe, South Africa and USA. Any branch any where, even UnZudd.

Welcome Sandman, enjoy the forum.

Team Moto Honda Springwood have a riding school and I think they still do an Advanced Roadcraft course that may be of assistance on the south side of Brisbane

The Mt Cotton courses are very good.  It's a great track. I've done one there.  They usually cost around $300 and the one I did had a Thursday night classroom segment followed by an all-day Saturday session.  It's probably the closest to you.  I know there are some in Sydney.  There is one out at Warwick and another at Willowbank, but they are both track days which aren't much help with your roadcraft.
Smart move doing a course.
Maybe OzSTOC will eventually be big enough to run our own, or employ the HART team for a day somewhere.  I know the HART guys would love to do it, and their courses are more affordable.  I've done three with them when they were running them for the Gold Coast City Council.  One of them rode an ST1300.
Welcome to the club- you'll need a shirt, of course- checkout the Shop on the Forum.  Get your work calendar out and mark in the OzSTOC events that occur on your 1 in 3 (or is it 1 in 4?)  There are Sunday rides, as well as Saturday (sports day) and then there are the over-nighters.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the info.
I work overseas and I'm in Oz for a week every 3 and I have the kids on the weekends so riding is limited to week days.
There are a few Ulysses people who ride during the week so I'm sure I'll be able to meet up with someone.
Thanks again for the warm welcome.

No not named after the Holden car although I did grow up in that era and had many drunken nights in the back of one.

Nothing too exciting. I work in PNG with a HR company doing Leadership and Management training.
I've been in PNG for the past 4 years. Love hate relationship with the place.
They call it the land of the unexpected. It certainly does that.
