Title: Jaycar LED Driving Lights
Post by: BigTed on March 06, 2014, 06:25:41 PM
A flyer just came through my inbox from Jaycar and I spotted (pun?) these.... I'm not sure how they compare, but here goes...
6300 lumens (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productResults.asp?w=SL3920&keyform=KEYWORD&SUBMIT=Search&utm_source=SL3920&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=CFAUMarch14) $229x1, or $199x2,
and
3486 lumens (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productResults.asp?w=sl3918&keyform=KEYWORD&SUBMIT=Search&utm_source=sl3918&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=CFAUMarch14) $129x1, or $109x2

Hi StikyPete,
Yes, I have these particular lights on my bike. As running lights they are bright and well designed, as driving lights, as ST2UP states little penetration and basically only good for a diffuse spread for the road side. In combination with a coupe of long range lights they would be great.
PS I paid $105 each for mine from JayCar.
A.

I've seriously thought about these.  The more expensive ones put out a beam that's good for twice the distance those you put up Pete, and they're cheaper by the pair (assuming your $215 was for one).  Be aware 6.5" is a fair sized light, so you have to look carefully at the mounts to ensure they are clear of the windscreen or cowl.

Yes, the Jaycar 3500 Lumen, 120mm diameter lights are the other units that are very much on my radar.  One spot and one driving light would probably be a good combination.  I don't really want to go to a 6" diameter light.

The 6.5" are probably quite heavy as well, as LEDs need a decent heatsink if they put out good light.

I doubt the 6" would fit under the mirrors without hitting the side tupperware anyway Pete....which brackets did you order ??

Well I bought 2 of the spots today and lit them up in John's garage, just connected up to a spare battery he had in there, and they looked pretty good considering they still had some blue plastic lens protection on them. I was hoping to get one spot and one Eurobeam but to get the 2 for $99 each I had to buy exactly the same lights . . . Aah well the spots seem to have a bit of a spread on them anyway . . . I'll mount them on the bike and see what they are like on the road . .

I've mounted 2 under the mirrors . . Have yet to zip the bike back up as I also added some low mounted running lights (replacing the reflectors on the front forks), a stebel airhorn, an alarm and making some adjustments to the TX3100 install and the Senna Bluetooth ensemble. Some minor adjustments to the towbar installation while it's all naked . . Hopefully zip it all back up tomorrow . . .

Ooh and I'm going to paint the lowdown beak of the bike at the front with sound deadening black spray on. The red paint is being battered somewhat with the gravel on the dirt roads that Saaz leads me onto even though I have a mudguard extension . . . So hopefully the sound deadener will look good while providing a better level of protection . . . And yes I will be shaping the paint outline so it all looks nice to the eye . . .

Then I need to go out to a long straight dark road to adjust the aim of all the lights . . Sometime this week as Saaz n I head off to Yeppoon next Monday . . .

I thought you guys already had lights? Didn't realise anyone was that interested in the cheap Jaycar lights . . However just firing them up in the garage they look brighter then my HID headlight conversion . . But that may just be the alignment. So far I am pretty happy with them considering the cost compared to something like the Ericas . . . Now they are awesome . . Fitted Lionel's in my garage and the Jaycars are not THAT good but purty good . . .

OK . . . If I get it all back together tomorrow, I'll try and get some fotos of high n low beam with n without the spots tomorrow night . . . And I'll try n remember what my HID spots were like and give you my comparison report . . . You got a Jaycar up that way?

BTW when I was a kid growing up in the new suburb of Wavell Heights, we used to go n watch car racing at the old Strathpine airstrip . . Out in the country back then . . You could be living on top of it?

Cool, but you don't have to go out of your way, whenever you get around for it would be great :thumbsup

There is a Jaycar up here :hatwave  and I'll have to do some research to find out where the Strathpine airstrip was :grin

Post my Daughter's Wedding (and associated expenses  8) ) I'm considering these.
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SL3919 (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SL3919)

and Giving thought to these in amber to soften the "whiteness".
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SL3917 (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SL3917)

I'm very prepared to go over mirror, as my experience with mounting driving lights on military vehicles was the higher you can go, the more detail you get, plus hollows and dips in the road ahead are less likely to become black/blind spots.

As I've never taken the Tupperware on the sides off yet, I'm going to need a guiding hand.

A couple of questions:  I have 35 watt HID conversion headlights on my 94 ST11 and they are pretty good front and side.  Is there any extra benefit from the driving lights and what is the current draw (amps) from the JayCar lights?  Having a 28 amp alternator with the other farkles I can only afford a 1 to 1.5 amp draw.
Thanks

Stuffed up the stone protection spray on the beak of the lower fairing, so bike not back together tonight to be able to compare Led Spot lights . . Hopefully to morrow or Wed night . . . Open up another pack of popcorn . . . Have a cider on moi . .

However I did turn it all on in the garage and the headlights on the back wall were not as bright as the Led spots . . . Now the headlights are 6000L and the spots only about 1800 but it could be the spots are better focussed then the ST's headlights? Anyway it is looking promising but the true test will be out on the road . . .

Just bought one flood and one spot from Jaycar (Wyong, Central Coast, NSW), $198.00

I just asked the sales person I want (don't need them) one of each, they asked the Manager and he said yes.  :thumbs

I am interested in seeing how you like them as well.
Can always do with more lighting for less power draw.

It's my nightmare coming down the road at me.
These days they'll have 500 white LEDS all over the front that's too bright even after they dip the kanga burners.
