Hi SA OzSTOC members,
As the new SA RTE coordinator, I'd like to hear your ideas (and times of the year) for some SA RTEs for next year. For the remainder of 2014 we have the following....
23 August - Melrose
27 September - Overnight at Silverton
18 October - Port Broughton
6-7 December - Joining with the Vics for an overnighter at Nelson
I'd like to schedule Blinman again for next year, as it's such a stunning ride and location.
An event every two months seems about right, so post Post your thoughts, and Alans1100 and I will compile a list of RTE's for 2015. What do you think about the possibility of an occasional mid week ride or monthly coffee run to suit the shift workers?
Cheers
StinkyPete :hatwave

We see this place in Wallaroo advertised on TV quite a lot.
Mid week ride.......$10 meals Mon to Friday except long weekends

----------------------------------------
We can do Saddleworth again sat or sun
Had the place to ourselves the last two times.

-----------------
Just tossing these into the mix
Maybe somewhere around Mildura for a Tri-state overnighter
And we can also use the border ride as a WA/SA meet........optional

Hey give that man a cigar :-++
If Adelaide rode east, Melbourne's North and Sydney West for a comfy full days ride.....we would all land around Hay NSW :think1
Sicman would be stoked having an RTE just over his back fence :popcorn

Balranald has a great Caravan Park, and decent pub, and would be well placed for a tri-state RTE. :beer

That's about where I was thinking. Hay, I didn't think of and in both cases I've only ever stopped for fuel but about 20 years ago.
-
I don't know why I remember places by the food I have eaten there....... :whistle
Balranald also has a great little bakery/coffee shop in the Main Street opposite the public toilets :thumbsup
But then Hay has the best Chicken Parma that we have eaten in like......for eveeeeeeeerrrrrr !!!
Regardless of location, I like the idea :like

Shiney and I stayed at the Balranald Caravan park, we where really impressed!

Being a shift worker on a 7 day roster I like the idea of a mid week run. I've been through Balranald many times, never thought of stopping other than for fuel. I remember doing the Hay plain some years ago on the blackbird, wore a flat strip round the middle of the tyre.

If you've got a day off and want to go for a ride, PM me and we could perhaps meet at Mt Barker for a coffee and a chat. (That's if I'm home and not riding somewhere)
-
Thanks Pete I'll keep you in mind when the weather clears up. This cold weather has been playing up with my arthritic hips
can barely throw my leg over the bike and very uncomfortable after a while. I,ve got an overnighter to swan hill to catch up with
my brother next month might be relying on drugs to get me there and back, or horror of horrors the car..

Your States RTE Co-Ordinators have their planning underway for next years OzSTOC RTE calendar :hatwave.....if you have a recommendation for a RTE that encompasses a great ride with a top notch destination post your ideas and experiences of a suitable location here for them to consider.

Hi SA OzSTOCers. I've raised the thread again as we look to making some plans for RTE's next year.
Suggestions have included....
Mannum
Wallaroo
Saddleworth
TriState Overnighter, perhaps at Balranald, as nothing in Hay got me very excited.
Blinman, but not in the middle of winter which did not get off the ground this year
We'd be looking to schedule around six events again, and I'm keen to set up something, perhaps monthly, for a mid week RTC (Ride to Coffee) at a set location, such as the Pomegranate Cafe at Birdwood.
Please post your ideas and suggestions, and we will knock together a program for 2015. :grin

I was composing while you were sending. Great minds think alike. :hatwave

I gave this a little thought yesterday and came up with Barossa Valley but I'm not sure where. Nuriootpa or Angaston maybe.
Closer to home is Burra with the old copper mine and old gaol for those that like looking at history.

Hi all.
Here's what we've come up with for the SA ride calendar for 2015. Are there any comments or suggestions before we set this in stone?
Pete
Ashbourne, SA - Greenman Inn (Sat 17th January 1230 hrs)
Toowoomba Nat Rally (20th - 23rd March)
Mannum, SA - Pretoria Hotel (Saturday 16th May 1230 hrs)
Swan Reach, SA – Swan Reach Hotel (Saturday 18th July 1230 hrs )
Balranald Tri-State – Balranald Caravan Park (Overnight Saturday 19th Sept)
Silverton, NSW – Dinner at the Silverton Hotel (Overnight on Saturday 17th October)
Ardrossan SA – Royal House Hotel (Saturday 7th November 1230)
First Wednesday of the Month - 10.30 am at the Pomegranate Cafe at Birdwood for coffee. (We'll give this a try and see if it meets a need)
-
Thanks for the feedback on the above proposed SA RTE program.
Note that based upon that feedback, I've amended the above post, and moved the Tri-State at Balranald from November to September as it will be a bit cooler, and Blinman has been replaced with Silverton.
Unless there are any other proposed changes or suggestons, these RTE's will be set in stone shortly. :thumb

What month will the monthly coffee meet start?

What month will the monthly coffee meet start?
I'm thinking January, but I will be away and in Tassie on the first Wednesday in January. Just to assess interest, please indicate if you are keen on a monthly mid week coffee run to Birdwood. I guess there is no reason why they couldn't start sooner.
-
Hi Pete
Well I am back full time now in Adelaide and very keen to get together with the group for rides. I cannot do midweek runs due to work but open to most other rides. Can you let me know.
Les

Hi Les and welcome back. :thumb
Here's the link to our entire ride program for 2016. http://ozstoc.com/index.php?board=26.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?board=26.0) We also have a joint SA/Vic overnight ride to Nelson just past Mt Gambier coming up on the 6th December, and a few of us are heading down there. You are most welcome to join us if you can and will need to sort your own accommodation at the Kywong Caravan Park. Watch this thread for details and our meeting time/place on Saturday morning, which will be published shortly. http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=5973.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=5973.0)

Sounds good Pete.
What day do you intend to leave and return so I can book some leave.
Once I know I can make arrangements.

For the Nelson ride, we will meet somewhere near Adelaide on Saturday morning, ride the 460km to Nelson, have a feed at the Pub, sleep at the Caravan Park, and come home on Sunday. This is the normal pattern for an overnight Ride to Eat (RTE). A one day RTE is just that. We meet at the designated lunch venue, share a meal, and ride home again. :thumb If you gong to come to Nelson, just post your intention at this thread http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=5973.msg95645;topicseen#msg95645 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=5973.msg95645;topicseen#msg95645) and you will need to make your own booking at the designated Caravan Park.
I'll post on that same thread a Saturday meeting time a place for those travelling from Adelaide. Stay Tuned!

Ok Crow Eaters it's time to rattle the brain bucket and put forward some idea's for next year. This is your club and your input is encouraged and welcomed.
On the table so far we have the National Rally in March and though not usually listed in SA as an RTE is the (SA/WA) Border Ride in August.
This afternoon had a quick look at a few places for consideration.
Royal Hotel, Balaclava http://www.royalhotelbalaklava.websyte.com.au/ (http://www.royalhotelbalaklava.websyte.com.au/)
Paringa Hotel (Riverland) http://publocation.com.au/pubs/sa/paringa/paringa-hotel (http://publocation.com.au/pubs/sa/paringa/paringa-hotel)
For an overnighter we can consider Blinman for this time of the year as the wildflowers should be out in force and/or the South East to places like Naracoorte/Millicent for a cave tour
-
Bridge Hotel at Langhorne Creek
Normanville Hotel
Coober Pedy, for a decent long ride to meet with the NT crew for an overnighter (suggestion from WendyL)
If we do Coober Pedy, we could also schedule a day ride on the same weekend for those who didn't want to go that far.
Do we keep scheduling the Pomegranate Cafe at Birdwood for midweek rides?
Tri State again at Balranald, but leave it for two years and make it 2017
Blinman, Wilpena or Rawnsley Park, all in the Flinders Ranges, for an overnighter
Is there anywhere that we've been that you'd like to go again?
Please toss in your suggestions, and make these gatherings your own.

Would Penola work nice caravan park and pub ..the wine is also not bad
-
Can I suggest Port Macdonnell in SA as a possible Overnight destination......good riding for both SA and Vic members. It's a quaint little fishing village with some fabulous sandstone structures and a top little breakfast cafe over looking the water.
:think1

The caravan park has just three cabins, and very limited facilities, and from what I remember the only fuel in town in a self serve credit card in the slot type pump. It would not be my first choice of location to stay, but it's quite a scenic coastline.

Whatever location you choose is considerd by me as long as you also have a smoking policy. I did not stop smoking 35 years ago to now suffer passive smoking which according to health authorities is as bad as smoking itself.
Looking forward to some positive outcome.

Thanks for the suggestion and comment, which we certainly take on-board. As far as I am aware, indoor dining facilities in SA are all smoke free, and all of the options that Alan and I are considering for 2016 have indoor dining. Do you have any favorite SA rides or locations that you'd like to see included as we'd love some suggestions, and we might be able to lure you over here. :thumb

What would Robe be like as a weekend RTE. I rode through there back in 2008 and quite liked the look of the place but didn't use or look at any accommodation or dining facilities . .

Robe is pretty good, and I've had a couple of good feeds of fresh cray there, back when it was affordable for us mortals.

We stopped off at Robe for lunch one day many years (mid 1990s) ago when we had the CX500 Turbo. On our way back to the bike we got some not to friendly looks from a few Harley riders that turned up after us. It seems the locals were more interested in my turbo (rare bike over here) than the cruisers so we just got on and headed south to Beachport; one of the stops in our coastal route to Sydney.

I am not talking about indoors. I am talking about the outdoors where we stand around bikes and discuss things/farkels etc and somebody just walks in and smokes. There is no difference for me if they are 2meters or 10 meters away. The smoke finds me all the time.

Hi all,
We've considered some feedback, and here's a "month and location" draft SA RTE program for 2016. Have a look and please post some feedback, as we want this to provide opportunity for as many SA riders as possible. There was a suggestion that rides should be scheduled more often, so here it is.
Are monthly rides too many?
Are the draft locations diverse enough?
Is the mix of day rides and overnight rides OK?
Continue to offer the monthly midweek coffee at Birdwood Pomegranate Cafe (not really been that successful, but see how it goes in the next couple of months)
January - Royal Hotel at Balaklava (Lunch)
February - Finniss General Store Cafe (Lunch)
March - NatRally - Perth
April - Robe - Saturday 9th April (Overnight)
June - Paringa Hotel (Lunch)
August - NT/SA Coober Pedy (Overnight)
Sept - Rawnsley Park, Flinders Ranges (Overnight)
Sept - SA IBA ss1600k ride
October - McLaren Vale – The Tin Shed (Lunch)
November - Normanville Hotel (Lunch)
-
Well done Pete and Allan. This looks like a good mix of short social runs and a couple of longer ones so we can assess our form for considering the iron butt run .
-
Here's another possible RTE location that I cam across today. http://www.finnissgeneralstore.com.au/cafe/ (http://www.finnissgeneralstore.com.au/cafe/)
The Finniss General Store Cafe is located in the backblocks of the Fleurieu Peninsula, and he food and setting is fantastic.

The café would make a nice change from a hotel venue.

OK. On the draft program, how about we swap the Langhorne Creek Hotel for the Finniss General Store Cafe?

OzSTOC doesn't have a smoking policy, nor will it adopt one as we have no legal right toi say whether some one can smoke or not. All Smokers know where and when they can indulge in a cigarette, pipe or cigar.
The venues for an RTE all comply with Oz Regulations/laws. IE No Smoking in the eating areas, there will be a smoking area outside somewhere for those that partake.
If a person doesnt like smoke, or doesnt want to be around it when talking then they have the ability to place themselves where the smoke isnt.
For the record, I am a non smoker, and never have been one.

Your quote of no smoking in eating is not correct. At Balranald around the campfire where people eat some also smoked. But is informative to me what the organization thinks about smoking.
-
The smoking issue, which seems to have hijacked this thread, has been raised with all State RTE coordinators via Personal Messages, with lots of feedback being offered. OzSTOC will not be introducing a Non-Smoking policy, and we will continue to work within local laws and guidelines.

Looks like a good variety of rides
:clap

Coober Pedy timing is good for those riders doing the Border Run . . Take a long slow ride and detour to Coober Pedy on the way back from Border Village . .
I would prefer the Lobster . . But happy to settle for wine . . Or wine with Lobster . . :Blow

I suspect it's bad timing for BR16 riders as it may be the same weekend. However, that date suits the NT folk as it's their long weekend and gives them a couple of days to get home.
-
Hmmmm . . How to check in at Border Village at noon n hitail it to Coober Pedy in time for dinner Sat night!
-
Its only 1506 Ks and 15 hours according to GooGoo, unless you have chunky tyres and head Nth East in which case its about 500 Ks by the looks..

Not fussed as I don't do either but Heather would prefer seafood over wine..

I am looking to have the last 2 weeks of april off so this might be a goer for me if the dates line up :grin

All the suggestions look really good. :13Candy

How about Saturday 9th April. That will dodge Easter, School Holidays and Anzac Day. I'm still investigating a Caravan Park that is within reasonable walking distance from a suitable dinner venue.
-
It would have to be in the 2nd half of April for me to get leave.
The work blackout period which is preventing me from riding to Perth then continuing on to do a lap starts from the 3rd week of march and includes the first 2 weeks of april.
I will keep an eye out on how it develops and see what pans out ;-*
