Title: St1100 speedo cable question
Post by: Carsten on June 23, 2014, 11:04:36 AM
Hi all.  Few weeks ago on a ride the speedo stopped working.  On a previous ride it had a small hissy fit and was stuck, vibrating for a 10 minutes and came right.  I ordered a new speedo cable and went to fit it yesterday.  The problem I found is that the cable wont come out of the speed housing.  By rights it should pull out easily.  I used a screw driver and turned the cable at the bottom and it tensions, I therefor assume the cable is not broken. There is a flat lid on the speedo case that the cable goes into and it has grooves that look like it can opened be with a small screw driver.  Before I go any further, I am after advice please so A - I dont cause any further damage and B - hope to understand what the problem might be and how to fix it.
Thanks in advance.
Carsten

The bale should just pop out of the back of the speedo, just undo the nut and it should pull out.

Another cause of failure, is the speedo drive on the front wheel. The gears can shear.

Thanks Brock.  The cable is stuck/jammed tight.  Tried a pair of pliers firmly on the cable and wont budge.  Didn't want to risk an all out assault for fear of further damage.

That is not good, its not supposed to be a tight fit. One wonders if a previous owner glued it in...

Problem has been fixed.  The cable had (after 20 years) grown into the bevel drive.  The drive housing was removed from the back of the speedo and cable released, new cable fitted and good to go.  It was done by my local bike mechanic who had the right tools meaning I didnt have to pull anymore of the bike apart.  New tyres and steering head bearing soon.
