I have always wanted to drive the Canning Stock Route but as the years tic by figured the only way I would see the CSR was to go on an organised tour. A search of the net found the ideal way to actually make it happen. On Friday I fly to Ayers Rock and to join a Tag a Long Tour where I will be one of three passengers spread across two vehicles along with several Tag a Long vehicles who head for Wiluna on Saturday. We travel across to Wiluna then up the CSR and along the Tanami to Alice Springs from where I fly home.
For those of you with nothing better to do you can follow my travels on the tour leaders Spot thread. It started when he left home in NSW on Monday.

It is going to be really rough having almost everything done for me, meals cooked, camping gear supplied (and I think tents even erected but I think I will be able to manage that) tryes change diesel paid for etc.
So no internet for me for some time

You forgot to mention that you had to mortgage your first born to participate.

A few years ago my brother in law drove The Central Road (track more likely) from Laverton, WA to the Olgas, NT. He was a bit younger then maybe 55, took one Toyota 4X4 wagon with a small Kangarra camper in tow.

Not quite that bad but retirement is certainly about spending the kids inheritance.

Hi Glen, I would've like to have done it when the kids were still little, but just couldn't get the time off, and logistically, it was going to be difficult with kids even travelling lightly, so one for later. A mate of mine has done it twice; once in the 70's, then the early 2000's. Take plenty of photos of the wells and the historic markers etc, and it's worthwhile getting up early and getting some early morning desert scenes as well as late evening. You'll have a ball. Also, you might check out some of the abandoned vehicles and trailers etc. Watch out for dead birds and camels in the wells :H

We were offered an opportunity to drive up the Tanami and down the Canning this year, but knocked it back, partly because I'm not convinced that my 4WD ute is suited to the flogging that it would get on the Canning from hundreds of kilometers of heavy corrugations. Doing the trip in someone else's vehicle sounds like a great idea.
I wish you a safe journey and lots of fun. :hatwave

Thanks Pete.
The above thought is exactly what I thought.

He must be wearing the SPOT because it's wandering all over the place in the Yulara campsite this evening.

Your travel summary after the trip will be very much anticipated and appreciated for my own evaluation to do such trips. Sounds great and hope it turns out great for you too. I am a bit of a lazy bum and need first hand experience stories to get me motivated. I have made my house and wine cellar so cosy it takes a lot to get me away from it apart from short trips. Total cost estimate would be of help too.
Enjoy Alf
