Today my 1100 ended its time with me with a BBQ.
I filled the tank and rode 10Km out of town to my mates place. When I stopped I smelt petrol. I switched off the engine and got down on my knees beside it to look for the leak when WOOF. I rolled away from the flames and hobbled to the shed, unlocked the door, got the fire extingushier from the car but by the time I got back to the door it was too late. I am a little toasted in the face (lucky I still had my helmet on) and my beard singed, but other wise ok.
:'(

I hate to see an ST or any bike exit like that.
But you're OK and that's the most important thing.
-
Wow!! That's unlucky.
I had a leak between the tanks on the ST1300 and rode home with it from the servo expecting the remote possibility of a fire, but figuring there were no naked flames or sparks.
You obviously got a huge fright. Sorry for your loss, and hope the insurers are understanding.
-
Steveo, I'm so sorry to read about the loss of your bike, but as others have said, its a blessing that you're OK, as a ball of fire at highway speed could have been a whole different outcome. I do hope the bike was insured.
-
Gut wrenching site Steveo, very sad indeed. Very glad you are OK though.
-
Again Steveo really sorry to hear about this news.....but also very glad to see you in good shape even if it is physically :-++

Wow! Glad your in one peice mate!
-
Bloody Hell!! You sure did a number on your bike! Didn't you like it or something???
I guess it is a small mercy that it didn't go boom when you were sitting on it. Other more delicate parts of your anatomy could have been singed.
Hopefully it won't be too long before you are back in the saddle. I guess on the bright side your missus can't argue that you need a new bike!!!
-
Yep yep, all of the above......................................................................being OK is beST......................................... :wht11
-
Its not that bad, a good wash n polish and it will be just fine, Honestly it will.....
Glad you are OK, but I must tell you that we dont condone that sort of abuse, well not to an ST any way..
-
bugger, glad you are ok though
-
Wow. Sorry to hear that mate. Glad you're OK. Hope to see you one way or another at an RTE in the future.
If not, I may just have to make a trip to the Cow Music Festival and pay you a visit. :grin
-
Glad your OK.
Your heart must be broken, I know mine is just looking at the Photos.

:eek so glad you're ok mate!
-
OMG what luck that you got away in time!
main thing is your safe and in 1 piece!
What do you think it was that ignited the fuel?!
-
or a slightly more acurate answer "flash point, auto ignition at 280c" :spank
sad any way you look at it, what a disaster, hope the insurance gets you a nice shiny new bike!
-
Sorry to hear about your bike you are very lucky not to have it ignite while riding
Guess we will never know the cause of the fuel leak :'(

Glad to hear your alright :thumb

and my beard singed
There's always a positive in these things
-
Now that ST1100 really is farkled isn't it :'(
Shalom, the can :-(

Sad news :'( but at least it had a 'Vikings Funeral' and went out in a 'Blaze of Glory' rather than ending up clapped-out or worse still a twisted wreck at the side of the road.
I'm sure if you could ask bikes how they would want to go to the next world, they'd prefer a cremation.
Glad you're ok and hope it was insured.

Dayam... that is absolutely crap. Really sorry to hear mate but I'm glad your OK.
-
That is some very sad news and something I would never have expected.
As the guys before have said, I'm glad you managed to get clear of the fire and I wish you all the best.
Cheers

I think that there is a lot of people here that share your pain but you will bounce back..... :wht11

Thank you all for the heart felt replies.
The final sad part came yesterday as she was unceramonialy flat dragged onto a tilt tray truck. Face has now returned to normal colour, just feels a little sunburnt. Now waiting on the insurance assessors.

Shouldn't be too difficult to make an assessment.
"Statutory write-off" I think would cover it.

Commiserations STeveo - what a bummer m8! :eek
B4 the Ballarat trip I was servicing the air filter on my ST1300 and the fuel hose ruptured emptying half a tank on the carport concrete. As I had just completed an oil change by running Wyvern until he was hot b4 draining the oil, I was worried that the hot engine vapours might ignite the fuel vapours and I was wondering how fast I could get into the house to retrieve the fire extinguisher.

So after reading and looking at the photos of Stevos tradgedy AND seeing St. Georges photos......
I have just purchased the fuel joint rubber pipe, the best insurance spent and only $10.99 incl free postage. :clap

Good 1 Bill! That pair of pliers I use all the time, however it has no protective coating at all and was left out in the rain just once and it rusted almost instantly. 2moro I will give it some CRC spray and a good work over - promise!
-
Those pliers look like my good ones after my kids have finished using them out in the paddock.
-
Doesn't pay to mistreat your tools in this joint does it! :fp :spank :-((( :crazy
-
:eek :eek :eek :eek :eek :eek :eek

Pulled my 1100 down last weekend to try and replace the nuetral switch. Pulled the tank out, but my left hand felt cold, took a whiff and my hand had that petroleum smell to it!! :fp
The fuel return hoses that come from the rear of the carby banks had deteriorated and split, from there the fuel drains straight onto the alternator ( BOOM ). WOW:
Looks like I was very lucky, could have been a copy cat incident.

This looks like a possible explanation for the cause, I will have to check mine.
Thanks Ray

The insurance money came through today. Have decided to sit on it and save up for a while and will probably look for a '05 on 1300 (red would be nice). ;-*
Still be riding my Honda 650 Dominator so will park around the corner at the next RTE. :nahnah

Had a chat with service manager at Honda Shop today about this, his opinion is that we are probably correct in assuming this is the cause.
The parts manager has never sold these hoses, he is now getting 5 sets from Japan for stock, I will be taking 1 set as insurance.
-
Ah STevo, commiseration and deepest sympathy over your loss.. That is heart breaking. Will you replace her with a sister bike?
-
At some point in time I will, but need to save up a bit more first.
-
:rd13
Bloody Disaster more like it... as we have all realised could have been a BLOODY BIG DISASTER at 100 KPH, with my ST 1300 having such BIG mileage I will replace that hose at the next service.. Perhaps your misadventure is a timely warning for the rest of us..
Sorry..

It was (unrecognisably, perhaps) an ST1100.
However, the ST13s also do have a bunch of flexible hoses linking the two tanks, which warrant inspection. I'd think it's an age-related failure rather than mileage, though.
-
:rd13
Yes but ST GEORGE posted and has a 1300 which showed a split in his hose (held with rusty pliers) so that was just a warning for me also..

True. Forgot about that one, but remembered the pliers. :grin
Wet weekend here in sunny SE Queensland, so good opportunity to clean the K&N air filter.
That means taking off the seat, the tank bra and raising the tank which will give me a chance to examine the hoses. They're five years old, and I'd hope for a lot more, but a look will cost nothing.
Compared with the annoyance of all the screws on the airbox and the pain in the arthritic fingers getting the tank bra strap under the front forks done up again, the inspection will be a pleasure.
-
STeveo! - glad you got off in time.
-
So was I. :eek
Still got a bit singed around the face, but ok now.

Replaced the 3 hoses on my 11 today, part numbers are,19656-MT3-000, 19657-MT3-000, 19658-MT3-000, visually all looked great, when I removed 19658 from the fuel shut off valve it was developing a split internally, externally I would have decided there was nothing wrong with it.
Cost of the hoses from Honda Shop was $26.65,Thanks Pezzz, (he paid for them), time taken was maybe 1.5 hrs, removing everything to remove the air box and then replacement was the time.
I would recommend all 1100 owners do this, a small price to pay for some peace of mind.

I went to put the parts in a wish list for my next order but the parts weren't found. Must put the sensor for the low fuel warning in that as well.
