Title: CB Changes
Post by: StinkyPete on August 01, 2014, 03:51:32 PM
This may be a question for Dale McLean when he bobs up.

I have two 40 channel CB radios, a Uniden 5 watt handheld on the bike and another unit as a fixture in my car.   I suspect many of us are running with older 40 channel CBs.     With the introduction of 80 channel CB radios, are there any proposed changes which will ultimately render the 40 channel units unusable?

I think someone is trying to convince his wife he needs 2 new 80ch UHFCB's  :whistle  :whistle

How they added the extra channels was to put new channel (frequency allocation) in between the existing channels.......so the new Channel 41 on the frequency spectrum sits in between the current channel 1 & Ch 2 that are spaced 25Khz apart.....this spacing is known as wide band.....the new spacing that has been around for some time now is Narrow Band at 12.5khz spacing.

This is designed to give more options for use in the existing frequency spectrum.

To give an analogy.....you have a 3 bedroom house with a single bed in each bedroom but need to accommodate more people in the home so you move the existing single bed aside and add another to the room under the same roof........house is still the same size but accommodates double the people, catch is the over worked sewerage system of the house suffers some what, new band plan suffers from splatter with other near by frequencies in the same manner at time.

You may notice when conversing with a person using your old 40Ch radio (wide band) and the new 80ch (Narrow band) on the same channel of Ch.20 that the volume of the old set will need be substantially higher than normal to here the new radio........becomes a little of an nuisance issue if operating in a convoy with a mix of old and new UHF CB radios.

I don't think Dale does this. It's probably not in his duty statement.

Hmm,

Dale has been known to do strange things, but I dont recall mentioning boobing up.. o:)

The older 40 channel rigs wont stop working. But if you need a reason to change, then we who have 80Ch rigs talk on ch 50 to get away from the congestion on lower channels, so if you want to talk to us you need to upgrade :grin :grin :grin :grin :grin :grin

ST2UP pretty much covered it all for how it works.  There is more explained here.

http://www.acma.gov.au/theACMA/400-mhz-changes-benefit-uhf-cb-radio-users (http://www.acma.gov.au/theACMA/400-mhz-changes-benefit-uhf-cb-radio-users)

Including:
Quote
On 26 May 2011 the revised standard was incorporated into the ACMA's equipment regulations, and the Radiocommunications (Citizen Band Radio Stations) Class Licence 2002 was updated to reflect the new channel arrangements.

... while radio owners will be able to keep using their current 25 kHz radios for six years.

Do what you like with CB.. ACMA gave up worrying about most of Australia when they closed all their regional offices... how do I know.. they put me out of a job when they did it. It's pretty much anarchy out there now..
