Title: RAM Mount Fitting
Post by: Whizz on February 05, 2012, 05:22:36 PM
Gents,
I've been looking at a RAM mount on their home page with a view to using one to mount my iPhone on the bike so I can use the GPS on it. I used their 'wizard' to decide on P/N etc and it tells me that I need a RAM-B-183U which mounts to the top of the brake reservoir. This confuses me somewhat as the kit comes with 4 screws but the reservoir on my ST (both sides) has only 2 screws. Before I order this bit can anyone tell me if this P/N is the right one for my machine, and if not what is the right bit?

Second question, I have an Evoline 2 helmet which is a flip-front one. Can anyone recommend a blue-tooth headset which will fit without interfering with the operation of the chin-piece? Most headsets I've seen seem to fit to the bottom edge of the helmet on the side, but because of the way this helmet works this installation method won't work.

Any sage advice from our resident guru's please??

Cheers

Whizz

A closer look shows 6 holes. 2 extra along the mid line

Thanks Brock, can I take it that the different distance between the two centre-line screws then fits the reservoir on the 2004 ST?

Should do, it would probably fit most 2 screw resevoir covers.

There is a link around some where to a replacement cover with either 1 or 2 RAM mount holes in it.

Brock, thanks for the info, I feel better about going ahead and ordering this bit. You mention a link to a replacement reservoir lid? any idea of where that link might be?

Roy, Can you tell me where you got the sharktooth thing from? was it local to you and can I get one on line?

Cheers all

You know I had the ram mounts on the bars for a few years, like for the GPS, phone, whatever???????? In my oppinion forget Ram mounts on the handlebars and get yourself a dash. Theirs heaps of em around, their probably the same price as a single Ram mount with ball and bracket and they work a million times better. Made mine for the SDT1100 years ago for a couple of dollars. Heres a pic. The GPS is in the same spot but the other stuffs been moved around a touch and theirs a Drift X170 camera now their. Hmmmm and you can see everything without having to look for it. Work everything without having to move about, and its all their in front of you :thumbsup

I agree with terrydj and this is on my to do list

Not that I need all that stuff in his pic. I'd be quite happy with a GPS and a camera mount there.

whizz if you want to see the ram mounts before buying then get yourself along to a Johnny Appleseed store.
They have the reservior top mounts and also the ones which go into the bar retaining holes for the reserviors.
If there isn't one out your way then when coming into Bris there is one in Ipswich Road about 1km past annerley Rd and 600m before PA hosp.

Yes, I saw that on OCC last night too, but having had a good  look at it I can't see any way to fix it to the bars on the ST, they aren't the right shape or the right angle, so I discounted them.

I made up dash pattern out of perspecs as it is easy to shape. Need to get the alum. to make it for real.

Mine actually curves to the shape of the screen as well.

I have also made my highway wings myself and they will get a workout on Sat. 11th

Hopefully there are no idiots and / or wankers in/on here. The purpose of this site is to help each other out with fixes to problems. The fastest way to get no help is to belittle the efforts that some one has gone to to :-
1. work out a fix
2. work out how to write the fix down so others can use it, and
3. put pictures up so everyone can see how its done.

If some one with good/excellent tech knowledge can then see a way to do the job easier, then by all means let every one else know. but there is no need to run down the originator.

We wont tolerate denigration of any of the members here for there efforts, and any transgressors will be dealt with...

 :well :well :law :law

Unless of course the denigrating transgressors are the sheriffs..

Haha...Do as I say, not as I do.

Edit: It may be a good idea to have a new section for These types of write ups and documentation.
I know someone here had a copy of the service manual on PDF which could also go up.

And I'm sure people have other guides etc.

Service manuals for the ST1100 and 1300 cam be found in their relevant sections, IE ST1300 or ST1100.

This document will be placed in the 1100 section.

Terry, nice write up, tho I think the self portraits are a bit much.... :grin :grin :grin

I am always after better ways to do things. Whether or not I use them someone else may find it meets their needs.  A dash is something I am still thinking about, as for me I find having everything up there is better rtaher than on the handlebars. I know plenty of others who do it the other way though   :p

No problem Terry
