Title: Buffetting
Post by: HunterTodd on September 27, 2014, 06:28:14 PM
I have all just started riding with a pillion on my ST1300 and have noticed that my head gets buffeted a lot more with someone on the back. It is quite tiring and I have to ride with the screen almost fully up to reduce it.  It is perfect without the pillion.

Is this common or is it just my son's block head disturbing the airflow?

Yep, its your sons block head.  Get him to take it off when he rides on the back.. :popcorn

This to all for feedback.

Would it worth trying upping the rear suspension setting when taking a pillion???

Any thoughts.

Have never noticed any difference when the Mrs is on the back. Not in terms of buffeting anyway. I noticed the panniers cop a hiding when she gets on. :fp

You might experiment with him holding on differently- the grab rails; leaning against the top box; holding your hips   or leaning towards you.
I've not noticed any difference with pillions, but I have a VStream screen.

Is he taller than you, if so then his head poking up into the airstream can affect the airflow around the back of your head. Fluid dynamics is a hugely complex field.

There was a screen maker in the US that was doing wind tunnel studies to help design different screens for different rider setups.

;-* I always have the screen fully up when the missus is on the back, never been any buffeting , she likes to lean against the top box. She complains if I lower the screen.
