Title: Impromptu RTE 16/2 to Jurien Bay
Post by: West Aussie Glen on February 13, 2012, 01:02:21 AM
Hi guys while looking at going to Coral Bay in April I thought it was time I had a look at  at least some of the new Indian Ocean Drive.
As such I thought a ride to Jurien Bay and back would be a good start. Being retired it suits me best to do this on a weekday (although getting north of Perth in the monring will be a pain or require an early start). Then seeing that Jurien Bay is about half way between Perth and Northampton where Winston 66 lives I thought he may like to meet in Jurien Bay for lunch. At this stage it is pencilled in to meet at Jurein Bay Hotle for lunch Thursday 16th. Anybody else who is free on Thursday is welcome to join us for lunch.

YES YOU HAVE...........................................NUMEROUS TIMES

FYI................So am I, also in April. We're flying out on the 18th but it's only for 10 or so days. We are going because my nephew is being ordained as a Buddhist monk. His father died a couple of weeks ago (only 48 years old) and his dying wish was that I take his place as 'sponsor' (a bit like a father giving away the bride) which is a great honour seeing as I'm not a blood relation.

PS. Sorry to hijack the thread but I don't think I'll be able to make it either. The assessor called round this morning and is authorising the claim ($4,600 he told me) and I'm not sure I'd trust the bike with bits of tupperware not fully secured.

Enjoy the ride boys.

Too bad we will be on opposite sides of the country Dave, we could have had our own World Record RTE for the most members attending an RTE in Thailand. Take ear plugs with you, the party gets noisy when the local band turns up.

Dave,
What happen to you and your bike?

Glen, this was my original post:

Just for the info of anyone who's interested, I had a disagreement with a car in Byford on Sunday (29/01/2012)

I'm in one piece and didn't actually come off.

To make a short story long:

I was riding in the kerb side lane (Lane 1), travelling North and approaching the traffic lights at the Byford Tavern, at about 55-60 km/h. I saw a white Ford in the same lane, about 75m in front. He activated his left indicator and his brake lights came on. GREEN light facing him.

I backed off and braked slightly, checked my mirror, shoulder check, saw that there were a few cars starting to pass me in Lane 2.

Looked back at white Ford, which still had left indicator going and still had a GREEN light. His brake lights had gone off and he look as though he was about to commence the turn.

I again checked mirror, then over shoulder and saw that there were still cars in Lane 2 passing me.

I looked back at white Ford, which still had left indicator going, still had a GREEN light, but his brake lights were back on ................................. THEN I realised that the bloody idiot had STOPPED right in the entrance to the intersection.

I braked as heavily as I could whilst still maintaining enough control to swerve around him and squeeze between him and the cars passing to my right, but I didn't make it and the left side of my bike clipped the right rear of his car, but I managed to stay upright and stopped in the centre of the intersection, so that shows the lowish speed I was doing.

When I asked him why he'd stopped, he said he wasn't sure if that was the road he wanted, so he was looking for road names??????????????????????

The best of it is that it is a hire car and it had a GPS fitted?????????????

I rode the bike home and it looked like, maybe, a couple of 100$'s worth of damage to the bike (I'd say a couple of 1,000 to the car) but after a good inspection today, there's a bit more damage that I thought so I'll be taking it down to The Honda Shop tomorrow and see what they reckon.

Main thing is, no-one's hurt (apart from my pride) and I didn't punch him.   I felt like it but I didn't.

Anyway, I just thought I'd fill you all in before it gets blown out of all proportions.

Chocolates, garden or house cleaning etc offers excepted, so feel free to volunteer (I'll make the coffee's and watch) as my pride is badly dented.

Sorry Glen, Thursday is a work day.

I normally have no problems with the Tonkin at 6am in the morning. Take Orrong Road, through the polypipe and watch out for the ST's lined up to collect the speeders. It's only an 80 zone out of the tunnel.

Gavo it is a real pain, I really just want to arrive at Jurien about lunch time, so it is either go before the traffic and take my time or go after the morning rush and be pushed for time so I will go early and take my time. I think Winston is planning on going early and having plenty of time too. I don't suppose you will have to worry about any traffic. One can always sit and watch the waves for a while although I have never been to Jurien Bay so I don't know what is there.

You'll be in rush hour Glen. Avoid the Kwinana heading north or leave earlier. The road widening cock up causes all sorts of issues.

You might want to go for a drive before the date, to test the water.

Glen,

Mate, if it wasn't for the Tip Over Bar I would have had some pretty bad damage to my left knee. They're worth every cent I paid for them.

Took some pic's but I can't load them for some reason.

Malcolm,
By joining at Leach Hway you miss a lot of the drama from the Rd works but I may even join at Canning Hway where I used to when the bridge was being widen for the rail.

Ended up with 4 at lunch in Jurien Bay, Winston66, Gavo, Mitch and myself and except for Gavo's lost and found I think a good day was had by all. Round trip of 501 kms for me. Longer for Mitch and probably Winston and Gavo as well.
