Title: My First Long Ride - November 15th-25th Roughly
Post by: jf3000 on October 25, 2014, 02:37:13 AM
Good Morning, Good Afternoon and Good Evening to the Fine Ladies and Gentleman on the forum,

Somewhere between the 15th to 25th November I am embarking on a massive journey to South Australia - Mount Gambier. I've done the whereis thing and it says using tolls 2300klm roughly. I wanted to find out from first experience riders the best way to get there. I will also have a car following me as well plus am stopping too for lots of rests including a hotel somewhere or the tent pitched off the back of the bike.

I've never undertaken such a massive road journey, especially going into another state, almost sounds foreign. If you can offer all of your useful tips for me this would be much appreciated.

So fuel stops, how much fuel will be needed, how long does the trip usually take, ins and outs of everything please.

This is a one way trip as well. I am moving there.

Just need to get my net back on so I can get my gaming happening again.

So thank you to all who reply.

Also being such a long ride isn't there some sort of badge I can get or something I can join to say yeah!! Never again lol or something, being pretty clueless I have no idea. Am going to miss stalking Big Brother in Brisbane City and Rodd from Maryborough even though I hardly see you cos you're so quiet.

Thank you.

Hi Jason,
Let me say from the start that there are awards for distance riding, and for information have a look at http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/. (http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/.)   A number of us from OzSTOC undertook the entry level ride a couple of weeks ago, riding 1770km in under 24 hours.   I rode from 0200hrs to 2100hrs with minimal stops to achieve this goal, so it's a pretty epic undertaking and may not be for you if you haven't done much touring or distance riding.

My advice would be to take route that avoids the capital cities, to minimize the stress and navigational difficulties.
Prepare your bike, and ensure fluids are good, and tyres are in good condition and pressures are correct.
Carry a plug type puncture repair kit, and a pump or CO2 tyre inflation kit
Take your time and build on your daily distances to find your comfort zone, perhaps starting with a pretty comfortable 500km per day.
While your bike will do 450km comfortably between fuel stops, you may need to stop more often to stretch and have a drink.
Wear ear plugs, which make riding far more comfortable and less tiring
Drink lots of water as you will dehydrate quickly on a motorcycle, particularly if the weather is hot
I calculate that at 5.5 litres per hundred kilometers, you will use around 126 litres of fuel for the trip.
If you are camping, stop in caravan parks which have hot showers, toilets, camp kitchens, and other travelers with stories to tell.
The most important tip is to enjoy the journey and smell the roses, as you have the prefect bike for the trip

Unless you're doing it in one go. Don't stress. Just think of it as lots of little rides. As you have a car following just stop when you want. There are plenty if towns to rest at. Just remember it's not the same as sitting in a car for 10 hours

use googlemaps and take the route it suggests.  2238Km and 27 hrs.  Use more than the 27 Hours and take 3 days to get there, just over 700Km per day.  This should give you comfortable morning starts and late afternoon finish with one refuel each day. Plan for lunch stops and morning and afternoon tea if that is what you normally do.  Take you time, ride safely and enjoy the trip.

What has already been said is very good advice.

Having spoken to Shiney, he was using a Camelback to keep his fluids up on the SS1600k and recommends them.  Taking a sip every 20 minutes, stretching while riding, basic callisthenics, also helps prevent cramping up.  Rotating you wrist, flexing your fingers, reaching to touch the seat behind etc.

Just out of curiosity, what is your starting point.  Because if it is North of Brisbane, stay clear of Brisbane for the weekend of the 15 and 16 Nov because of G20.  So detouring out through Toowoomba is a good idea.

If you can, make a holiday out of it, (looks like you've allocated 10-11 days), so stop and take a look at Dubbo Zoo, check out the Telescopes and Observatories at Parkes.

Look for other places to visit along the way via http://www.visitnsw.com/ (http://www.visitnsw.com/)

Check with ST2UP and Pockey as they could be on your route, stop in for a cuppa/break/night.

I believe we have a friendly member at West Wyalong who might be willing to put you up for a night.

Don't ride tired and if you are riding early morning or evening be aware that is when the Roos, Wallabies, Wombats and believe it or not Tortoises and others like to be on the road.

And most of all Enjoy.  You will be surprised what you can handle.

My first longish trip by bike was in 2007 was from Adelaide to Port Hedland via Perth (to see sis) with my first night in Whyalla. Only 400 km from Adelaide but it was also time with the granddaughters.

As above, don't rush it, I plan my fuel stops to the fuel warning light or the nearest fuel stop before then.

I knew I had compulsory fuel stops along the way and they were logged as way points in the GPS and I allowed for an optional overnighter in Boulder with Heather's brother. I ended up having two overnight stops between Whyalla and Boulder and stopping every 100/150 km to stretch the legs/take a photo etc.

In 2008 Heather moved up as well so I had her in front most of the way while I followed on the bike and used car as a buffer.

Googles suggested route. Plan on three days riding but allow four

Having just done 1700klm in 2 days twice (return trip), the thing that stood out the most for me was that I wished I had cruise control on my bike. My right hand and wrist suffered from rigger-mortis and cramps from constantly holding the throttle in one position. Fit an after market unit and you will be very appreciative of it being there. I intend to fit one before my next big ride.

I've never been rich enough to get the MC cruise so I've made do with a throttle lock but I'm keeping an eye on these two and have one on mine before the WA rally

I love my McCruise!  Set it, and relax the wrist, even take your hand off the grip and rotate and flex it to relieve the tension.

I did specify it was one way, there is no me coming back. Those dates that I have given are the dates somewhere in between that when I will be leaving. There is no me doing this in 24 hrs or something, I am taking my time, cos I noticed its a massive long way on a bike.

Def a long way to go and see Shiney too :P

The problem with the cruise control is I know nothing about the wiring of he bike and would end up doing more damage than anything.

The bike is going in for its service, 2 new tires, those angle plug things so i can fill the tires up and also that stuff in the tired so if i run over something im good, something Shiney showed me, he has like a few hundreds bottles laying around everywhere, had no idea what they were, front brakes and a massive service, im gonna enjoy every minute of this.

SA is a bit of a long trip :eek
I'll have to get some better cameras at work to spot you riding around ;-*

I'm sure you'll have a great time. As the others have said just take lots of breaks and stop for a rest whenever you feel the need.
Have fun :hatwave

I dont even know where we're living yet all I know is we're going to Mt Gambier, I have already started looking for a place. I wouldnt mind getting the camel thing as well, let me sus streak out. Does he have an online shop? Okay PM sent, I await.

100klms in what direction? Man the more I read about this place the more I am seeing that its pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I think I am going to miss my 40mins ride to the beach.

South east of Mt Gambier, Jason, Portland on the coast in Vic
Plenty to see around the Mount, scenic country, but watch out dawn and dusk near the pine plantations, there are plenty of furred grasshoppers and bush chooks.
Several nearby towns near Mount Gambier, and some nice rides in the area.

" Man the more I read about this place the more I am seeing that its pretty much in the middle of nowhere."

Hadley the middle of nowhere I assure you.
I've lived in that region throught the late seventy's to the nintys. I've lived in the middle of nowhere too and they do not look the same.

positioned nicely between Adelaide and Melbourne.
Not far from the coast and places like Beachport or Robe or Portland and Bridgewater Bay.

do the auto route in googlemaps, then put mouse on the route given, and you can click and drag the route to different waypoints.

If you click on my map above you'll see I set start, finish and two way points.

What you can also do is click on a blue line between to points and drag it to another road or town or sightseeing point you want to go to.

This image above top left shows the start, stop and way-points but if you look at the map, I've dragged the route out of Brisbane to Toowoomba (it is not in the waypoints) and I've also dragged it via Bathurst.

Give it a go, you can't break it.  :grin

So this is the way I am going to go, only because I don't fair myself out in the middle of nowhere and then something happening and being stranded.

For my journey I have some questions:

1. What to take (Am getting a camelbak)
2. Tools repair kits for tires anything?
3. Hotels / Places to stop sleep
4. How long should i ride for each day or try and cover without over doing it.
5. Drinks, ive seen different drinks that are could for riding like Gatorade or something

If there are any other riders that want to come for a ride so far be sure to let me know as the company would be awesome.

The bike went in for its major service today and I will pick it up next week 13th or so.

As much information that you can bombard me with will be awesome, so far everyone has been awesome.

Cos I don't have the charger thing installed on the bike like Rodd (Haven't seen him in ages) I am taking those batteries that let you charge the device via USB I have heaps. I guess I don't want to be taking to much stuff as I don't want to weigh down the bike and end up using more fuel, the less the best :)

More to come.

Jason,

Please avoid Brisbane from the 11th to the 16th of November as the G20 has lots of permanent and temporary road closures.

How far you ride each day is really up to you.  It also depends on what you want to stop and look at along the way.  If you are aching too much or yawning, you need to stop for your own safety.

As for places to stop, if costs are an issue, check out cabins in Caravan Parks or Hotels.  If cost isn't a problem I prefer a minimum of 4 star.  I would plan on at least one Motel night at about half way to ensure you get a good nights sleep.  A good nights sleep will help reduce fatigue.

Don't over do the Gatorade and don't over drink water either.  Drink if you are thirsty.  Going down the coast you shouldn't get too hot, so you shouldn't be sweating too much.

Be aware that south between Coffs Harbour through to Macksville there is a fair amount of road works so a lot of 80, 60 and 40 zones.

Hi again Jason.   Most of your questions have already been answered in earlier posts, but don't "overplan" your trip, and just ride and enjoy the experience of motorcycle touring.  It's good that you're getting a service on the bike before you go, so that it's in good condition.    You won't need much to travel with and most first time tourers take far too much stuff.   A couple of spare jocks, sox and  a shirt can be rinsed and dried overnight.   Toiletries, meds (showing my age), spare footware, a map, wet weather gear, phone and charger,  some simple tucker for the road, and a Visa card, and you could keep going and do an OzLap.   A visa card and a mobile phone can solve most problems.  :grin

In answer to your specific questions.....
1.  I don't use a camel back, but drink whenever I have a break.  I don't like the weight on my back.
2.  Make sure have a puncture repair kit, although punctures seem to be a rare occurrence and I've never had one in nearly 200,000km of riding.  Join the OzSTOC RAN before you go.  See  http://ozstoc.com/index.php?board=63.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?board=63.0)
3.   Under each State listing on the Forum you will find Food and Bed recommendations.   I generally go for caravan parks, but its a personal choice, and recently stayed at in a cabin at the Glenrowan Caravan Park which is on your route.  Nice folk and cheap clean cabins
4.  Find your own comfortable daily distance and if you haven't done much touring, perhaps you could start with 500km which is a very easy distance.   If you find that is too easy, then go a bit further the next day.
5.  Sports drinks tend to get expensive if you are buying several each day, and water is free.

Don't forget our join SA/Vic overnight RTE at Nelson on the 6th December.  It's just down the road from Mt Gambier, and will be a good opportunity to meet a bunch of the Southerners.   :hatwave

Cheers
Pete

Picture this:

2.   CB1300, Williamson & Mrs W, Micalong Creek, nearest town Yass (one hour away), flat tyre, NO mobile 'phone coverage .......

3.   CB1300, Williamson & Mrs W, Bonang Highway, nearest towns Orbost (80km) Bombala (70km), flat tyre, NO mobile 'phone coverage .......

A puncture repair kit (includes mini compressor) is good, knowing how to use it is better ..........

Short answer, Adelaide doesn't have Tollways.

Now, if there was some way of turning the map of NSW into origami, and bypassing the state, you would be able to avoid tolls there too.

Everytime I go anywhere near Sydney, traffic congestion forces me onto tollways, whether I want it or not.

Last trip through, I had two semis alongside, an impatient cage driver behind, impossible to change lanes, and a $14 fine in the mail for travelling 150 metres to the next exit.

It can be quite easily done and very similar to the route your taking. If you had a GPS you could set it to avoid toll roads........even google maps (the old one) had that option.

On this one way trip dont bother trying to avoid tolls.

if you have a car following get them to write down the phone number that they display so people can pay via phone. The phone numbers are 24 hour service. When you pull up stumps for the night make the phone call and pa by credit card over phone.

easy peasey.

AVOID BRISBANE due to the god damned G20 rubbish!

just have fune and enjoy. Dont plan too much. Dont ovdr think the drinking issue. If you get thirsty find a nice shady spot, pull over, stretch your legs and drink a bottle of water you bought at the last servo.

Jason,  I offer this "Motorcyclists Prayer" for your great adventure.

I pray that you will have the foresight to know where you're going
The hindsight to appreciate where you've been
The insight to appreciate the good and the bad as part of the adventure
And that it will only be the rubber that hits the road.

Ride safe and have fun.   :thumb

Ill resize the photos.

Do I have decided to head along the coastal road to Sydney, then go around it and head down towards the great ocean road, out to Phillip island then back to kosciusko through the forest then over to mt gambier.

I plan on making lots of posts and photos here and facebook. I leave Sunday morning around 4am :) So excited.

I just came through that was 2 days ago. The road does get more fun after Grafton, but I was tempted to take the Bruxner Highway and go inland as have not done the full length for ages.  Must be a bit warm at the moment.

Goulburn is around 570 k ahead. By the way... Kew servo, 30 k from Port Mac has some ah..unique... souvenirs of your travels.
Its only a minor deviation. 200 metres. Tees, singos, and lots of other items... I have several...
They also have a Far Coff range...

Jason's original plan did include Kosiusko, but then again it is 320km of twisty riding from Wangaratta.

A good run, around 580k for today, well done.

So, which way from there.. Horsham or Hamilton? ... if the latter, I have a ride to do tomorrow, but Horsham is a bit far, not enough fuel in the tank and one day before pension day.

Bendigo Maryborough Avoca Ararat Hamilton Coleraine Casterton Mount Gambier is the shortest route, 398K

or an extra 75k through Ballarat to Warrnamboool to Mt Gambier

I like the inland routes, particularly the Pyrenees Highway, but then again, any road looks good to me from inside a motorcycle helmet.   :grin

I just spoke to Jason, he is in this map area on a kangaroo dodging exercise. He will call me again when he reaches Horsham, and I will meet him on the highway at Hamilton somewhere around 10.45, 11.15 am

Successful run, 240k ride for me, I caught up with Jason just before 1 pm, about 30k north of Hamilton and escorted him to the A1 from Heywood to Mount Gambier, only about 80 km left of the epic
He is very tired, and taking regular stops. Should arrive in Mt Gambier sometime around 4.. 4.30pm, depending on stops.
Safe travels, mate. .. see you next weekend at Nelson.

A good ride today, over 400k covered of around 500, He should be at about 'B' on the map now.

So for the record I do. Stop a lot and drank lots of water. The tires on the bike are brand new Bridgestone and I must say after reading all about tires these rocked. Bike is running like a dream.

Thank you to everyone who helped me with much needed info. Luckily I didn't need to ring the RAN number. But useful to have.

All of you more experienced than I have made my life of my ride awesome. So thank you.

As for the person whomever mentioned about long distance riding bug, thank you. I'm now hooked.

Look forward to a new destination and meeting many new people.

Thank you once again.

Jason.

Thank you. Now to find other forum members in my area for rides. I need to go to some meets and learn how to mod the bike as I want more lighting. Plus need to add a charger so I can charge mobile. Need my battery checked too.

I'd like to do a ride from the bottom of where I am to the west and see if I can get to Western Australia. I'd love to do that run and also camp on the side of the road.

To  get you started, come along to the Nelson RTE next weekend, and have a chat with the gathered wisdom.   You can inspect the ways that we've farkled our bikes to suit our particular styles and needs.    OzSTOC member locations can be seen on the Member Map  http://ozstoc.com/index.php?action=googlemap (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?action=googlemap)

Just a 'by the way'...I was in Nelson this morning. Those coming from Mt Gambier side, the Caravan Park is the first left immediately  after you cross the bridge, and last turn right before the bridge if coming from the East.

Caravan Park entrance is on your right, 950 metres from the intersection.

Counted 9 fresh roadkill skippys between Portland and Nelson this morning. (70 km)

Will have a chance to try out my new 'Martyr' sleeping mat next weekend.... (the ones that blow themselves up!) ;-*

G'day Diesel ya cheeky bugger.

Funny that! I expect you refer to Overland Corner RTE?

Buggers that was. First bloke there by hours and last one to feed...I should have done a Kev :OldMan

But I went for another ride in the a/noon instead but boy I was a bit hungry.

Nelson was my back yard for a lot of years...just a regular fishing patch in Pritchard's days...  real old river rats will recognise that name.

Dave I'm not too sure dinner is high on Tony's radar these days ;-*

Oh man my bike is making a friggen noise. I'm not sure if after using both brakes together that the brakes that were new have completely gone to shite or the disc is rubbing. Cos when I engage the brakes it sounds like metal on metal. Did sound like this when I left Brisbane.
Title: Re: My First Long Ride - November 15th-25th Roughly
Post by: Gatey on December 03, 2014, 12:44:06 PM
The disc is always in light contact with the pads on all and every disc brake regardless of make.
No matter if you use both front and rear at the same time.

You probably have road grime and shit on the disc.

Is it front or rear. Put the bike on the center stand , click neutral and swing the rear wheel over. No noise then its the front end needs looking at

BUT

Rears can grumble a bit once they start getting down a bit and have lots of road dross half baked on.

Go look in the mechanical section of this site in the 1300 specific area and read about best pads and why.

Are you trailing the rears with your toe without knowing?

And you can see pads on both ends of these crates . Get your touch and have a look...its your bike, work it out. Mt Gambier has a bike shot as does Millicent

Hmmm work it out. Hmmm Gatey You scare me

I now have a real garage. I'll prop it up and see what I can see. Both front and rear make the grind noise. When brakes are applied sounds worse. I'll look.

Why?

Have a chat with Kev...he just discovered the need for new pads.
Brakes are logical things and probably the easiest things on a bike to selfservice for general maintenance.
