I have a studio unit (queen bed), but can check about getting a 2 bedroom unit as pricing is for up to 4 people for those, and would work out cheaper with at least 2 - one bedroom has 2 single beds.. I will check tomorrow and let you know.

We'll see all you good people up there on Saturday afternoon. We won't make it to lunch as the route we're taking to get there isn't direct and we're not planning to leave till about 8am, and we're going to head over Mt G, Esk, Hampton, Maidenwell blah blah blah and eventually hit the Bunya Hwy at Kumbia. So we don't expect to get there till mid afternoon. We're travelling with Brian and Nat Crawford.

John, if you need a place to stay in Brisbane on Friday night let me know. There's abed here for you (infact I can now give you a whole boat to stay on ... lol). So your welcome to stay here and either head off a little earlier so that you can still meet the rest of the group for lunch, or travel with us?

Cheers

Barry and Marissa.

Based on confirmed numbers,  I have booked a table for 6 for lunch on Sat under OzSTOC and 6 for dinner at 8 pm Sat night. if 8pm is too late,  they do take away from the restaurant.

If there are going to be more, please let me know. Text is fine, the number is below in the signature block.

We are going to pull out of this one :'(
Due to the storms today there will most likely be a number of roads closed or in bad condition, bits and pieces of trees and whatnot on the road and just generally bad conditions for riding on mountains.

Good luck and safe travels to all that still wish to attend.

Cheers

Due to water in the engine,  I'm not going either.

With all the flooding I am tempted to call it off for Safety reasons.

Shiney has skilfully guided me through the process of removing the Tupperware and we removed the spark plugs, cranked it over,  sprayed water on the walls and ceiling of the garage. Put the plugs back in and after a bit of cranking Pan Fired back into life.

Water poured out of the exhaust onto the garage floor. After it warmed up, steam came off the radiator and have us a small fright as it looked like smoke.

While it was apart I took the opportunity to turn the Air horn around so that the trumpet pointed down and inwards towards the horn vents. Now quite a fair bit louder and now it won't fill with water.

Thanks a million Shiney! Awesome work.

OK, its been asked so I'll ask again, how did you get water in the engine Gaz?

OK. You did ask.  Make a cuppa before you start.

I left the airport at 4:30 pm on Friday, 1st May 2015. When I came on to the Moreton Road on ramp, I discovered the traffic on the Gateway was at a standstill. So using the new Lane filtering laws, I rode slowly (30 km/h)  up the left hand safety lane.  While doing this before the Shell at Nudgee off ramp, I had to dodge cars which were half in the lane and trying to block anyone using the lane. At this point I wished I had a modulating headlamp.

At the Shell/Nudgee Rd on ramp, I hit a large puddle of still water and sprayed the parked cars. QI rode through that and continued up the safety lane until the road works where I then had to go into the middle.

All the while on the CB I was hearing that the Gateway was closed at Nudgee,  Boondal, Sandgate Rd, Depot Rd, Deagon Deviation,  the Bruce Highway and that the Highway wad also cut at Dohles Rocks, Anzac Ave, Buchanan's Rd, Caboolture etc. In 21 years of using the Gateway Northside I had never seen it closed due to flooding. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

As I rode through towards Deagon Deviation,  each of these "closures" wasn't true, so I pressed on. On Deagon Deviation the was another long puddle of water only up to the bottom of the rims. At the Brackenridge Rd on ramp there was water over the road in the on ramp and half the left lane with 4WDS still coming through the on ramp, so I slowed to about 10 km/h and rode through the left side of cars. up to an area where both lanes were clear of water again, only to discover between Brackenridge Rd and Wyampa Rd there was more water over the Road. All this water didn't reach the foot pegs,  so more riding up the left side of cars which were driving up on the right hand safety lane.

I got through that and came across more water across the road under the Wyampa Rd overpass. There was another line of cars, again up against the safety rail, slowly making their way through water that now came up to the foot pegs. As I was going past them they were quite spread apart but an impatient jacked up 4WD came up the left side of me as a truck coming the other way approached. Both were pushing big bow waves. Both waves met at my bike and peaked at the front of my bike. The one from the 4WD was the strongest and because it hit me from the side, it nearly knocked me over. With that the endings stopped. As soon as I hit the starter and got no  kick over at all, I knew what it was.  How I knew is another set of stories, suffice to say, Army and water crossings and one youthful mistake with my own car.

Fortunately for me,  2 young fellas (from Aviation Australia) who had themselves been snatched strap dragged to safety (but had a working engine) came jogging in to help push me out. After helping me they turned around and jogged back to help the next car. They kept doing that for 3 hours and rescued a total of 7 cars.

Then the very long wait to be towed began.  There was no point calling RACQ until the waters subsided. No one was getting anywhere in a hurry.

While we stood there in the rain,  we could now see where the water was coming from.  The Pine River had burst it's banks, flooded the wet lands and was coming over the Gateway Motorway and flooding towards Brackenridge.

Around 6 pm  the waters peaked and people were trying to reach RACQ. I tried at around 6:10 and while I was on hold,  one of the other people said that because we had driven through flood waters RACQ wouldn't tow,  because it would be an insurance job. So I hung up.

At around 7 pm the water was starting to recede and more vehicles where getting through so I rang RACQ priority line (ultra membership) and the lady said because of my location that Main Roads would have to clear Me to a safe place and then RACQ would then tow me home.

At around 8 pm the water cleared the road and for the next 2 hours traffic roared past until the Lend Lease contacted road safety crew could get there to block the left lane.  The bloke in the bumper truck let me sit in his cab and turned on the heater to keep me warm,  and when he heard me on the phone to Shiney to let him now I was out for this RTE and that I had turned my phone onto Power save mode and couldn't use the Web.  He offered for me to use his charging cable. During that call to Shiney,  he offered to come over Saturday to show me how to get the Tupperware off so I could remove the spark plugs to release the water.

Because we were all stranded on the Gateway we were in a clear away zone and had to be removed. So the crew started to organize Tow Trucks to remove us. One turned up and said he was on his way to another job, but he would be back and his rate was $110 (Lance). After he left an RACQ towie turned up and said $316.48 to the nearest Exit being Dohles Rocks Rd. The other biker who was stranded with me had also been told over the phone that it would be $317 just to get to the nearest safe point.

Lance came back and took a car away to North Lakes and said he would be back. He came back and picked up another one who was trying to get to the Sunshine Coast,  and on my recommendation took them to Kallangur Shell because there was a Macdonalds,  Workshop and a Motel nextdoor. He then came back for me and the other bike from Kallangur.  $110 each and we were delivered to our doors. Lance from Viper Towing (NorthsideBrisbane) specializes in lowered cars and bikes. 0413 956 590.

The generosity of strangers and friends was impressive. ++ ++ Awesome work yesterday Shiney.

Apart from Saturdays shenanigans,  here endeth the saga.

It wasn't flooded until the bow waves combined. Small cars were getting through. The impatient ones in the 4WD were the biggest problem.

But it does show it doesn't take much to change from OK to Shiiiiit!!!!!

I'm happy I was able to help and am very glad the bike is once again working well :runyay
(PS thanks for the awesome screwdrivers  :-++)

Glad your bike survived Gary. Good work Shiney for offering to help out.  :clap

We were really surprised to wake to blue skies on Saturday as the rain hammered down Friday night. Marissa, John and myself left home at 8am and met up with friends Brian and Nat just down the road a bit. I was surprised that the roads were mostly dry and free of debris. We were meant to head over Mt G but after teh rain last night decided that wasn't a good idea, so we took the Logan Mwy to Ipswich rd and then headed out to Blacksoil and on up to Esk for a morning tea.

At Esk the clouds were looking ominous again so I added a liner to my jacket and put my wet weather pants on as it was pretty chilly and I was expecting it to get cooler going up the Hampton range. It did get cooler but there was no rain beyond the occasional spit. A little detour at Ravenborne took us around Lake Cressbrook and into Crows Nest where we picked up the New England Hwy to Cooyer.

Leaving Cooyer we caught two cattle trucks just before the start of the only nice sweepers on that section of road and the trucks were seriously on the nose. A left at the top of the range and we rolled into Maidenwell for lunch. After a hearty meal we refueled and headed out to the Bunya hwy at Kumbia along some lovely back roads and then made our way into the Bunya's.

The new restuarant at the Bunya's is fabulous and just what that area needed. We opted for take away meals as we couldn't get into the restuarant till 8pm. Brina stoked a wonderful fire and we settled in for a great night.

The following morning was clear so after another hearty breakfast we headed for home again via Maidenwell, but this time via the Maidenwell - Bunya Mtns road which has a short 4k section of easy dirt. We waved goodbye to John at the turn off and headed down the range. The views heading east along this section of road are brilliant.

Back at Maidenwell we headed out to the New England hwy again and this time turned left and rode into Yarraman, and then road back to Kilcoy and around Neuram into Woodford for a coffee stop before a nice run down Mt Mee to Dayboro and onto the Gateway to home.

We had a great time and good weather. It was nice to catch up with John again and enjoy the company of friends. The Bunya's is a great destination for an overnight RTE and I'd recommend doing it again.

Cheers

Barry and Marissa

Unfortunately Gaz people are ignoring the that slogan "if it's flooded forget it"....but the fact of the matter is you don't enter flood waters, and as we've seen on the news there are those who have lost there lives because it didn't look that bad and because they thought they knew the road because they travel over it daily.

There's 2 safety points to remember with regard to flooded roads.

1. If you can't see the white line from one side to the other you don't enter the water

2. If the water is moving (flowing).... You don't enter the water

In your situation if you hadn't entered the floodwater then

- you wouldn't have had to contend with the oncoming bow waves
- your engine wouldn't of stopped
- you wouldn't hve had to be rescued
- it wouldn't have cost you the price of a tow
- you wouldn't have had to pull off the Tupperware
- you wouldn't have had to clear the water out of your bike
- you wouldn't have risked damaging your beautiful Blue ST

I understand it is tempting so you can get home, but the situation is just so unpredicable and the waters so unreliable and unstable.

Sabie,

With my Army training I'm well aware of the rules of water crossings and have done dozens of water crossings.  On the night I could see the white lines and like a lot of people was caught out by how quick conditions changed.

On the Gateway where we got caught, there was no obvious river crossing, so it looked like it was just blocked drains and therfore just standing water.

I am also all too aware of the IFs and have duely chastised myself for impatience, stupidity and a touch of complacency, arrogance and self delusion.

I can tell you no one regrets my situation now than me and I too believe "if it's flooded, forget it!"

Thanks for the great read Baz - I've wondered many times about doing the Maidenwell-Bunya Rd (with its dirt section) - sounds like a no brainer.     :-++

Great riding out that way - looked like you guys had a terrific time - well done!    :beer

PS - how painful is it having to do 60km/h down the Blackall Range on that racetrack ... nice piece of meandering road?!!      :||||

Oh ... was that a 60k zone? ... Pardon my mistake!

Yes definitely do the Bunya to Maidenwell Rd. The dirt probably varies from time to time, but there's only 4k's of it.  It would be a better ride heading east than west as you can see the views coming down the range.

The road on to Dalby from the top is all bitumen, nice road with good views. But then any road where it is not bucketing down rain is great, so I may be biased in any reports on non-rain riding back from Queensland.

Hey Gadget

Sorry Mate didn't mean to come across as having a go at you and I'm sorry if it appeared that way.

The message is clear, and I think we all need to be aware that our actions through and due our former training gives us a higher level of skill and ability, however the down side is that the public may witness our actions and try to replicate them.  In floodwater, stormwater situation people will do just that and follow the person in front.

So we and I'm including myself in this, need to be aware that what we do can and does influence people to make decisions which can have a detrimental effect. Your training is through Military Defence and mine is through Civil Defence or Public Safety as it's known in Australia and the emphasis may differ in some area's.

But again, sorry for any confusion.

See you on an RTE and we'll pick up from where we left off last time we saw each other.

Sab

I took two days to get up to Brisbane, and the weather got worse the closer I got. 950kms from Canberra to Urunga for Thursday night sounded fine when I first planned the ride, but riding in the dark through fog, mist and pouring rain from Ebor down the Waterfall Way was not the best of fun. The next day saw walls of rain and wind all the way from Urunga to Brisbane. I arrived around 3pm, having to go through a bit of water around Mount Cotton, but the rain got even worse after I parked the bike.  I can definitely say Pirelli Angel GTs can handle the wet.

The ride back was uneventful. I came back inland through Dalby, stayed in Coonabarabran for the night, then home via Dubbo, Cowra, Boorowa. After the trip up less exciting and a bit of sun was just great.

At Maidenwell, the group

Yep. Great spot for an RTE. And makes for an excellent over nighter.
