Title: Sharp Helmet Ion Generator
Post by: Old Steve on December 15, 2014, 01:41:26 PM
I'm a little bit overweight and up here in the tropics I suffer from sweaty hair and wet helmet linings with the consequent smelly helmet syndrome.

Bought a Sharp Helmet Ion Generator, you just plug it in, put your helmet over the outlet, and leave (overnight).  It supposedly blows a stream of ionised air through the helmet which kills the bacteria eating the sweat and leaving smelly residues.

Since using it, my helmet doesn't smell after getting wet from sweat, in fact the flow of "ionised" air through the helmet dries the lining as well.  I don't know if it's the drying effect of having air flow through the helmet or if it is in fact the ions killing the bacteria and mould, but my helmet is much fresher now that I put it on this machine after a medium/long ride (will have to put it on the machine even after short rides soon, it's getting really hot and muggy up this way).

Here's some more info about a product that seems to work.

I told Missus Biggles about the idea of putting the helmet in the freezer to kill the bacteria.
She laughed me out of the kitchen- they put live human tissue (e.g. sperm) in freezers for years and they come out kicking.
It just puts bacteria to sleep and the emerge re-energised.         :||||

Having a wet helmet all the time in Queensland makes me interested in such a thing. Back home it always dries and airs out.

I'm a little bit overweight like Old Steve but I don't have this problem.
The solution is to move to Canberra.  :runyay

No solution if you can't travel north of there or ride on hot summer days.     :p

That's the unit I bought Pete.  While the helmet dries out after I've taken it off due to the heat up here, it does develop a bit of a pong over time so I'm quite happy with this unit.
