Went checking the nuts and bolts after the farride and have discovered a stripped allen key bolt :spankhead.
Somebody while servicing or summat has ruined the channel the key pushes into.
It's the one at the bottom of the plastic over the battey.
Any ideas on how best to remove it?

I gather it's the Allen Key recess in the head that's been rounded out.
You could try grinding a piece of flat steel, like a screwdriver only with a wedge taper and sharp edges slightly over-size to the recess.
Tap it in and turn with pliers. Once you break the "seal" it should come out with finger pressure.
You can buy replacements from any m/c mechanic for around $2 each.
The alternative is drilling the centre and applying an "Ezyout". They work fine, but screws are notoriously hard to drill and Ezyouts have been known to snap off DAMHIK :'(

Carefully use a dremel type tool to cut a slot that will allow the use of a large common screwdriver. A large easy out may be enough to grab it without drilling. There are also a parallel thing that can be tapped in with a hammer that can do the job.

Sometimes just using a small chisel to turn the bolt initially is enough to then turn the bolt out with a large philips head screw driver or by your finger.

A mate of mine showed me his method. He gets a Torx socket (?) one size bigger than the allen key and hammers it in to the bolt, then unscrews as normal. He did say that the Torx socket can break though, so I wouldn't say it is a failsafe method.

For something small like that, a centre punch used to "gently" tap in the direction of removal usually will start the retreat , then fingers will take it out :thumb

you could also try and get a pair of multi or locking type pliers onto the outside of the allan key bolt

I am a grease monkey, use a torx bit, use the next size up and tape it with a hammer.they usually come out that way, otherwise you have to use an easy out.cheers :blk13
