Title: frustrated
Post by: creeture3 on January 13, 2015, 12:14:55 PM
Hi folks, the other day I had cause to travel the Princes Highway, if only to Pakenham from the city. Man, it was soooo FRUSTRATING.

What I would continually get was one car in the left lane travelling at 99 kph., and another in the right lane traveling at 101 kph.,  taking 5 minutes to overtake and move back into the left lane. Thus our draconian speed laws are blindly obeyed.

Now, I don't speed (a lot), but I do like riding slightly faster than the surrounding traffic, (just like the coppers are taught) keeping myself out of trouble. I don't lane split (but I do filter) but yesterday, I was sorely tempted!!

An "unintended consequence of the law", as they say.     :-[

It was primarily intended to raise revenue.

What really annoys me is when I'm sitting on the freeway limit 110 in SA. coming up behind a semi doing under that (sometimes). Car comes up on the right hand lane doing well over the speed limit and then sits in my blind spot and obviously slows down so that I have to brake or run up the back of the vehicle in front.
I'm normally very even tempered when driving but this really makes my blood boil!!

It was primarily intended to raise revenue.

What was??? I don't understand what you mean?

People driving over the limit or under?

Or having the 3km buffer

Or car makers setting speedos to be under?

Hopefully Victoria will get in line with the other states soon

Also what's wrong with raising revenue? If you don't like it, then don't do it and be caught. IMO.

So ride at 130 and use the special bike lane...

jokes aside ridding in Vic at or near any commute time is something I design my plans to avoid.

Believe it or not speed limits have been a consideration, among many others,  of the viability of a relocation into the state. West is the most tolerable area as far as see.

West is OK unless you are towing a trailer . . . Maybe the NT?

West as in the western half of the state.

I have a ute for towing a trailer at pressent though I have considered an off road trailer on an ADV as a means of moving sufficient water and fuel on an extended trip in isolation.

As I understand it, there is zero tolerance, so even going 1 kph over is a punishable offence.
Hence, my argument is, a lot of people might argue that exceeding the posted limit by say, 5 kph, to safely pass a car being driven under the limit, is a safer option than taking a long time to pass exactly on the speed limit.
Such a degree of enforcement suggests revenue raising rather than an attempt to reduce the hazards of vehicular travel.

This degree of fear induced by punishment has been known to lead to reckless acts provoked by the situation described in the topic as "frustrating" (to alter the part of speech from a past tense verb form of the adjective, to a present continuous form of the verbal adjective).

Not an entirely new notion, but I was making the observation in the context of over-exacting enforcement.

WendyL, this should make you happy then;

Open Speed Trial – drive to conditions

A one year open speed trial commenced on 1 February 2014 on a 204 km section of the Stuart Highway north of Alice Springs to just south of Barrow Creek. From 1 September 2014 the existing open speed limit trial will include a new 72 kilometre stretch of the Highway from Barrow Creek to just south of the Ali Curung Rail Overpass.

Easy way to ease the frustration......move where there are no freeways, the speed limit is 110 and the roads are open and you can see oncoming traffic (?) for a long distance.

Never have the problem out here, but it's 50km to do the weekly shopping, on the STeed whenever I can.

John,

Do you know Ian McDougal from out that way?

I may have run into them, but not been introduced. The name doesn't ring a bell, nor does there property name.

You'll have to come up in June and look them up.

Booked in . . Sharing a cabin Friday/Saturday nights. I'll try and find out more about where he lives, I'm sure it's out of town. He'd be in his 70's, plays a guitar and downhill skis.

Most of that road is just as good as other sections, don't know why they only picked those bits. The cruise control only goes up to 154kph so that will have to do if I am feeling lazy.  After even the 130kph sections going back to 110kph feels so slow. Takes ages to get anywhere, although there is nothing much to get to out there!

Unfortunately I have to ride 1200km at 130 to get there  :||||

Wendy,
The 1 year trial finishes in a couple of weeks. Time flies when you're having fun riding up and down the Stuart Highway. Any indications of what the government intends doing about the trial come 1 February this year?

Yep, extending the trial so they can analyse the data.....not much to analyse, zero fatalities on that stretch of road....fingers crossed they'll extend it to other stretches of the Stuart Highway north of Tennant Creek, before March would be even better to reduce riding time to Toowoomba  :thumbs

Hopefully, once the trial ends, they'll decide to extend it all the way  ;-*
