I'd ride there but I'll be in Nambucca Heads that weekend on the first FarRide of the year.

Date changed to the 22nd Feb so as not to clash with FarRide East #33 to Nabucca Heads.

You can't place your long distance passion onto other riders you haven't met Lionel,  the round trip Townsville to Yungaburra and return is an 8 to 9 hour ride without the stop at Yungaburra for a meal or stops in between ... It's still a long ride for an RTE for the Townsville guys and a 2 hour ride for the Cairns and a 30 min ride for the Atherton rider.

Townsville could ride to Cairns or Malanda on Sat, then ride up and have lunch and ride home after. I'd do the trip from Townsville leaving earliy in the morning, have Lunch a chat and ride back.  Got the perfect bike for it.  ;-*

I'm working on the principle of build it and they will come.  Something is better than nothing.

There are not a lot of choices up that way that I know about, but if you have places and destinations in mind for the Townsville area, there are 10 Months or 48 weeks left that need RTEs organised up North, please feel free to post some RTEs for our northern compardres.  :grin

Some of the guys up in Townsville Own businesses and aren't able to do the overnight runs. Why didn't OzSTOC appoint an RTE coordinator for the North?

I can't do it, have Enterprise Trainer training with SES that weekend.

Sabie,
I don't place my "long distance passion" on any riders whether I've met them or not.
I didn't ask for the date to be changed. Nor did I choose or suggest the location.
Now that the date has been changed I'll try to get there as it's a beautiful part of the country. I was born in Atherton just down the road from Yungaburra and I lived in Malanda for a few years,
The weather will dictate whether I ride Canberra to Yungaburra as part of an IBA quest or break the journey into sections.
I've travelled the Gillies more times than I care to remember, starting when the top and bottom gates regulated the one-way trip. In my experience a round trip from Cairns to Yungaburra is what you say, approx 2 hours, not counting lunch. Atherton is 13 kms from Yungaburra.

Lionel,

If you want to break the trip in Brisvegas, there is a spare bed here.

Sabie,

Anyone can volunteer to be a ride coordinator for up North.  I'd prefer it as I don't know the area or people up there well and would love to see them get together more often.  I'm just doing my best to ensure whatever I come up with doesn't clash with other RTE rides and if possible FarRides.

I dearly would love to hear suggestions for RTE destinations up that way and possibly even suitable dates.

Andrea and I are now planning to ride up that way from Townsville on the Saturday and stay the night at somewhere like the Peeramon Hotel.

Who else is planning to be in Yungaburra for lunch on the Sunday?

Nambucca Heads, Caloundra (via Casino  and Beaudesert), Kingaroy, Coonabarabran, home.
We're collecting Alice's sister at Hornsby on the way through. I tried to get Alice to drive to Hornsby after which her sister could drive the rest of the trip. I could ride the bike to Kingaroy then on to Yungaburra. No such luck.

Another Townsville bloke, John Maddy, has expressed an interest. I don't know if he is a forum member, but if he is, can you tell me if he is "Rhino", please?

:think1 With the rain pattern expected to come over the Atherton Tablelands area this week, we'll need more than a shirt. We may be better off swapping Eungella for Yungaburra.

The cyclones seem to have cleared the big rains from the north, so Yungaburra should be good!

Two ST1300's left Townsville on Saturday morning. John "Rhino" Maddy on his Red 2009 model and Andrea & myself on our Black 2010 (March 2011 ADR??) model. It was quite warm. Cardwell was the first stop for rehydration and smoko.

Mena Creek for lunch was our next stop. While stopped there, a storm came over the place. We were on the edge of it, so got dressed and rode off in torrential rain. We were out of the rain after about five minutes, though and didn't take long to dry out.

Our next scheduled stop was to be the Kairi Hotel and all was going well until just after we started up the Gillies Highway. We got caught in a tropical downpour that lasted from just after the first overtaking lane until we got over the top of the range.

The Kairi Hotel had taken in a group of backpackers and no longer had spare rooms, so they missed out on our patronage in the restaurant and bar, too.

Rode over to Atherton and stopped at the first motel we saw without a "no vacancy" sign. It is the Hinterland Motel. Not quite a 5/5 Star Motel, but the bed was big and comfortable enough.

We were joined by Rhino for dinner. He came armed with a Domino's Supreme pizza with anchovies and Andrea and I feasted on a Luisun Big Mama supreme pizza and washed it down with a nice red wine that Andrea selected from the local Cellarbrations ride through bottle shop.
https://www.facebook.com/LuisunPizzeriaTakeAway/photos/pb.173065989490435.-2207520000.1424654378./330435177086848/?type=3&theatre (https://www.facebook.com/LuisunPizzeriaTakeAway/photos/pb.173065989490435.-2207520000.1424654378./330435177086848/?type=3&theatre)

Sunday morning ride plans for us were put on hold, as we were in need of repairs for Andrea's Rossi boots. The sole was starting to separate, so we ended up at Bunnings (of all places) to buy a roll of PVC tape and strap it back on for the trip to lunch and home.

The café had quite a few motorcycles out front when we arrived and the bays were barricaded off, so we parked in the shade a few spots back down the hill.

Ben "Me_3" from Atherton arrived on his 2003 Red ST1300 around midday. We ordered and ate lunch while talking about ST1300's and their possible modifications, as well as where we had ridden them etc.

At about 1:00pm we packed up and headed for home.

We got caught in a downpour in Malanda for a few minutes, but other than that I think we stayed dry. Temperatures on the way home were mostly 35+ and got up to 39 a few times, so even with all the mesh panels fully open and the zips in the sleeves and back open on the DriRider jacket, it was hot. Definitely not suitable for the OzSTOC jackets on a day like that.

Another stop was made in Cardwell for rehydration and we also nominated a stop at Frosty Mango was "required" for a final refreshment. I can recommend the Dragonfruit. It was a good way to sign off the end of the ride.

I'd like to thank Rhino and Me_3 for helping to make the ride more memorable for us.

It seems that some planning and coordination of riders will be required to find suitable dates and destinations for rides, so that more than three can be in attendance next time. On hot days up here, keeping the return trip to less than about 600kms will probably make it easier to make them into one day rides, also.

Regards
John

I enjoyed the RTE  to Yungabura experience immensely,  but for one slight problem. After I got home then relaxed for a bit, feeling totally nacked was a condition un welcomed. JC I can hardly wait to get back into physical training. I know no time like now.
Thanks for a great weekend  John JC  Crocombe, Andrea, and Ben Me3  in a quain yet picture perfect location.
Unfortunately a lot of ST riders mussed out.
Maybe next time?.
