Thanks Alan.
Kangaroo Island is on my bucket list (4WD and boat).
I've often wondered if I can make the crossing in my 6 metre boat to avoid the horrific ferry fees.
Going by your pics its looks doable.
Being retired I don't need to worry about deadlines so I could wait out any patch of bad weather before crossing or returning.
Travelling at about 40 km/hr (in swell up to 1 metre) it would take less than 30 mins each way.
Did you see any smaller craft making their way across?

avoid the horrific ferry fees.
One of the reasons we haven't crossed yet........that goes for Tasmania as well

Not that I noticed....there's a few boats in town so I guess some have done the trip on calmer days and it's only about 8 miles of the coast.

It's a relatively short crossing, but is notoriously rough if tidal flows out of the Gulf are running against the wind.  They will bring up a short, high chop.

Thanks Alan and StinkyPete.
I wouldn't deliberately set out in an uncomfortable chop although the boat (Haines Signature 600F) is very seaworthy. A smaller Signature with a similar hull completed an epic journey.

"Signature's classic 542F hull is an old Aussie favourite that's been around long enough to be considered a tried and true, proven performer. She's based on the Haines Signature 540F hull, which comprehensively proved its sea keeping abilities during Hans Tholstrup's solo journey from Australia to Japan a few years back. The trip gave this Haines Signature hull an undeniable pedigree."

I also want to have a go at the King George whiting (unsure where or when they bite) and snapper off Whyalla.

I'm sure John and I would be available to help launch your boat at both mainland and KI . . .  o:)
