It must have hit him off a bounce in the dirt.  There couldn't have been much energy left judging by the time it took to come back and then bounce.  The dust appeared to be "off-line" with the target, but it was possibly tumbling erratically by that stage.  If he had to ask whether he was bleeding it sure wasn't moving fast when it hit him.
