Saturday RTE Details

A southern loop of the Gillies & Palmerston Ranges (287km). Tolga Woodworks for smoko... then on to Millaa Millaa for lunch (cafe or pub across the street)... then down the Palmerston, back to Cairns.

A northern loop of the tablelands & the coast (255km). Mt Uncle Distillery for smoko (rum tasting & cafe)... then on to Port Douglas (The Little Larder Cafe, 2/40 Macrossan St, Port Douglas) for lunch... then back along the Capt Cook Hwy to Cairns.

Accommodation
Book your own. There are two Big 4 caravan parks & numerous motels. We regularly stay at the Tropical Queenslander Motel, Lake St, Cairns. It is $99/night for a self catering apartment, with evening meals also available. It is walking distance to the Tandoori Nights restaurant, as well as a couple of hotels, groceries, pizza or fish & chip shops.

I might need to make it a partial trip or something instead of the full weekend. What day are you doing the actual circuit and are you leaving Cairns and heading to innisfail then up and around or are you doing the trip from cairns through the tablelands then down to Innisfail?

The Saturday RTE is the southern section, starting from Cairns, up the Gillies & then returning, down the Palmerston via Millaa Millaa, back to Cairns... :think1... If you can’t make the whole thing... :think1...

We could meet you at Millaa Millaa for lunch, ride back to Cairns together & have an early curry so you can get home at a reasonable time. That way... you get a ride in, get fed & get to check out your night eyes, lights & farkles before the Eungella Far Ride, the week after.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm a shift-worker & when my four days off come around, Kate & I enjoy treating ourselves to a Cairns trip, maybe two or three times a year. This time around I got the holy grail of days off: fri, sat, sun & mon... 22, 23, 24 & 25 May... a weekend period which makes it easier for other members to join us.

We ride Mky-Cns (730km) the first day, zoom around as per the Cns RTE for the next two days, then come home on the forth day.

... so, there will be a next time... similar, but maybe not the same... I'll post it as RTE again.

Post by: Scarlett Thunderbolt on May 25, 2015, 12:31:29 AM: OK, we lost Friday due to work issues & started riding up to Cairns on Saturday in what turned out to be perfect riding weather. We had a pitstop in Townsville to feed & refuel, & then again in Cardwell to top up, stretch our legs & relieve our aching joints.

A few kms further north we passed a red ST1300, leading a pack of other breeds, & got a great wave from this lead STeed. A surprise phone call a short while later revealed that it was in fact StinkyPete, on his way south, having spent the previous night in Cooktown. :rd13

The sun was going down in a spectacular fashion behind Pyramid Mountain when we got into Cairns. After dumping our bags we headed over to Tandoori Nights, where we’d arranged to meet Bikebear & his missus for a curry. It wasn’t hard to recognise Bikebear, aka Craig, & a pleasure to meet Leonie as well. The food, a bit of rehydration & meeting up with fellow OzSTOC members were all great. We found out then that Port Douglas would be crowded with a Sunday carnival happening, so we’d modify things a little & run the Saturday RTE route instead. :think1

We met Bikebear at 9.00am beside the Big Marlin & headed out for the Gillies, on our way up to Tolga. We had to adapt quickly to the fact that being two up, we had to take different lines to Bikebear, who was riding solo. We scraped our pegs a few times & went in deeper to some corners than we’d have liked... but it was also brilliant fun trying to keep up with Bikebear who was doing it so smoothly up the front. :gldst11

Tolga Woodworks was our smoko stop, with great coffee, fantastic food & a really interesting display of woodwork artistry in the workshop gallery. Well worth a visit. :EatCake

The return ride back down to Cairns went the way of McHugh's Lookout, near Millaa Millaa, to check out how the weather looked. This would give us a good idea on which way we’d return to Cairns. We decided haze, not rain, so then we went down the Palmerston Highway towards Innisfail, enjoying some more beautiful sweeping curves. We bypassed some of the highway on the way back, using Bikebear’s local, lesser known back roads, knowledge – a different way to sidestep some of the Bruce Highway traffic.

Our one day (280kms) RTE was done & dusted by 3.30pm. Now only a litle bit of a rest, a second helping of curry for the weekend (yes, we DO like curry) & a spot of packing should see us ready to hit the road early tomorrow for our trip back home.

We’re looking forward to catching up with those of you on the FarRide East#35 Eungella, next Saturday. We’ll see you at the Eungella Chalet.

I did try and video it but I don't hasve much computery skills when it comes to video editing etc.

Also I looked and some and the vids were out of focus, upside down, or just basically useless. :||||

I will see if I can find the video I watched in relation to this.

In essence the answer is YES but with some reservation.

It was HARD to get the tyres on and off the wheel in the situation I was in ..... not the right tools, not a very good work space etc etc but will I do it aqgain next time ..... witht he right tools ...????? yeah I think so as I know what to do now and how long it will actually take.
