Title: Where have you got your 12V Cig Lighter socket mounted?
Post by: Diesel on April 27, 2015, 02:52:22 PM
I want to put a couple of 'always on' cig lighter sockets for power from the bike to various accessories.

Just for ideas - where have you folks got yours mounted? Any probs with heat/rubbing wires, weather etc?

Thanks in advance. Diesel        ++

In the back of the left pocket.  Keeps it away from weather, and has the space to fit a charger and phone.

I have put one in the tail space, wired directly to the battery with a 15A in line fuse.   I have another in the top box, and a lead coming out the bottom that plugs into the socket in the tail.  Thus I have a powered outlet in the top box for charging stuff.

Mine is temporarily stuck (with GoPro stickers) to the top of the dash while I re-think the dash shelf idea. It'll be remounted on the next evolution of the dash shelf. It's water proof and very little water gets to this area.

I've fitted 2. One on each fairing just below the fairing pocket lids. Both waterproof. Appliances go in tank bag or in the left locking pocket (notch cut in the rim to allow cable -  doesn't leak). One is live and the other ign. switched. Very convenient.

I have two in the left side glove box on the ST11.  One has been "duetsche plugged" for the gps and the other is normal.  Enough room to charge phone etc.  Comes in through a small hole in the lid and is wired through the ignition being the reason I put it forward.  Works well and have had it for a few years.

Here's mine- as you would expect to see.

It's hot wired through a 20A fuse.  Primarily installed for a pump to save taking the plastics off to reach the battery.

Just a question: Why do you want an 'always on'?  Wont it flatten the battery if you forget to unplug?

Wouldn't an ignition switched one be better??

Thanks to all posters thus far.     :thumb

Spanner - you are correct - but I primarily want to use it/them for illuminating LED lights whilst camping and recharging bluetooth gizmos, and if I have to have the ignition on, then I also have to have the headlights on. Not good.

I generally don't forget items that are plugged in as I am usually eagerly awaiting them to be unplugged again for use.

I like the idea of one poking out from under the seat that may be tucked away when not in use too.      :thumbs

Will look into USB/cig lighter combo units as well.

Cheers, Diesel

Always on is good for charging flat phone, camera, bluetooth batteries while inside having a feed n coffee. these items wont flatten a healthy battery.

Also handy for that little LED light in the tent and cook area, with there own switches of course.

It also proveide a handy place to plug in the battery tender while you are away for a couple of months touring overseas. :like

I have just the one in the right pocket switched through the ignition.
If I need power for my iPhone or a light or a USB port i use this:

Saves me the trouble of fitting extra power sockets and it'll even jump start the bike battery if that goes flat!
