Title: Custom OzSTOC Jacket feedback
Post by: ST2UP on June 23, 2015, 10:22:04 PM
Well the Jackets are now out and about and travelling some miles.....we even have one on tour in Europe at the moment.... :eek

So let's hear some feedback, see some pics of you and your Jacket and where it's been  :think1

Did we get the Jacket right for a sub $200 garment ?? Have we achieved the best outcome in quality, finish and practical use of the Jacket for the varied riding conditions of our members from all over the country ??

Let's hear your thoughts  :popcorn

Cheers

I must admit, even though I have not worn mine, I am extremely impressed with the design and flexibilty of the jacket. The jacket seems to be well made but that will be tested over time. For me it is certainly a great jacket for under $200. I would buy one again but 2 or 3 sizes bigger . .

first the bad or not so good or very slightly annoying:

Sleeves are a tiny bit long
the Velcro tab for the lower arm zip could have been longer so we could Velcro it "closed when the zip was open .... us Hotties in hot Townsville need all the ventilation we can get and having the little Velcro tab fluttering around is ever so slightly annoying.
Would have liked a strip of white down the back piece for extra visibility
zip tabs are a tiny bit small
the producer in that other country was a b@#tard

Now the slightly good, good and excellent :

Love the colour
quality seems excellent
zips seem excellent quality
great ventilation
considering this was a mass production try to please everyone the fit (finally) is pretty good
great storage
neck fitting is great
love the removable liners - both the water proof and winter
Love the patch/embroidery - I will be embroidering my forum name, Far Rider Number and my IBA (when I get that one) on as well.
the communication with the whole miserable process was excellent
the back up support has been for me great .... and I was one of the ones who missed out on the correct size in the first round
the small details like the buttons being rubber coated is great
love the fit mostly --- my body shape needs some work which is happening so soon I will be bigger in the chest than I am on the stomach and will therefor be able to cinch in the belt to make me look like an Greek Lothario.

This is my first ever bike jacket so I don't really have anything to compare to BUT when I go in the shops I see that our club jacket is of a higher quality than the ones in the shop for the same price.

Spanner great report mate,,  :thumb
I agree with moST  of yours except the neck Velcro tab, I find the thick padded tag annoying.
I haven't ridden much since Toowoomba so cant report on winter but all other aspects moSTly  impress me. I like that I can get a jumper on with all the liners in so I'm confident I will be warm riding.. :H
I commented with pics on one of the other jacket threads all my dislikes..   :think1 I haven't yet seen a 2nd order jacket to see any changes made... if there were any.

after cutting a few thousand kms in my jacket, and being the crash test dummy I have the good and the bad...

The Bad:

the collar I found dug into my neck and drove me nuts, so I took it to a sowing business that adjusted it for me

the arms could have been a touch longer.

zip on the pockets could have been a touch longer also so they open up a bit wider

dealing with the overseas supplier has been a LARGE learning curve

The Good

with all the adjustable straps I have been able to move it around to my moving waistline!

I have been able to ride in temperatures ranging from 6 to 38 degrees, and found it has performed well with the inserts in, and also with the insersts out and the vents open the air flow has been excellent.

the rubber button covers, and the zip pockets are a fantastic bonus as well for safety of items

love the colours, and the fact it is very distinctive, even in a crowd I can spot an OzSTOC member from miles away.

For the price I paid, I got an awesome jacket! I rate it an 8/10 thumbs ups

Hi all, Well we are impressed and rode NZ all of april and very happy. The jackets were great on cold frosty morning we found, and as day warmed up out came the liner still very comfy. Three jackets are touring South America at the moment so when they get home oct should get well founded report. The new jackets are still in rack but look same great quality. Thanks to all who done a great job. Denis Diane.

As it has finally started getting cooler up here in Townsville north Qld     :nahnah    I found I needed to close the vents on the arms today ..... I had a problem with BOTH arm vents.

The issue was the mesh inside the vent was getting caught in the zipper.

Next time a jacket gets made maybe a slightly thicker mesh material to stop the zipper biting into the mesh.

Just a thought.

I have ridden in 40c heat just fine, and now down to 4c for an extended period. With liner and rain liner in over a shirt, vents closed, it was warm enough. A jumper under the liner would have been better but I did not want to take the jacket off in the cold. The heated seat and grips filled in the gaps.

I get mesh and linings caught in a few bits of gear, but the idea is worth seeing if it works.

The only fault I have with the jacket is the same as Streak the collar strap other wise I now wear the jacket every time I am out, well worth the money.

Now that the weather has turned a freezing 19 deg cel in Townsville I finally had a chance to try out the jacket with the zip vents closed.

Very warm and toasty.

Love it!

Loving it as my dry season jacket.  When it gets to buildup again though I'll be switching back to my white mesh jacket, black is just not practical in 37deg, 90+% humidity.

Air flow is fine when moving, but even short periods stopped at traffic lights are almost unbearable in anything but whit.

As a Townsvillian co-tropical wearer of the jacket with WendyL I also have to admit that with the 90+ % humidity we get and the blazing sun black is pretty unbearable.

I think further south in the summer it would be ok as the humidity wont be such a hugefactor .... but then again just wearing skin is really Fn hot as well.

So true Spanner, even skin is almost unbearable to wear in the buildup.  Not so bad in the real wet.

Has anyone ridden through a solid rain with the new jacket, and can report on it's wet weather performance?

Not yet, it's the dry season, although there was a little bit of rain that the NT put on specially for FRN#2.  Won't have any decent rain here until November/December

A couple of weeks after the Toowoomba AGM, Easter Saturday I think, the day it rained so much they postponed the horse racing, we rode the Putty Road, and I was soaked to the skin.  The waterproof jacket ain't.

Was that with the rainliner in? Mine works pretty well with it in, it was never designed to have a waterproof outer ☺

I have been unfortunate enough to ride in a fair bit of rain, pouring and flooding in fact, for days on end. I had no trouble with the jacket keeping the water off me inside the liner, but the outside did get wet, as you would expect. I did the waterproof liner taking care to get the zipper part folded over and velcroed.  The Trophy has good weather protection, but the rain was so heavy and persistent that it fell on me directly.  Boots did fill with water, but not the jackets fault - new boots now in use. To keep the hands dry, need rubber gloves long enough to go inside the waterproof liner, so that the water goes on the outside of the gloves. A few days of wet but clean hands with normal 'waterproof' gloves sent me in this direction. If you go inside out of the rain, puddles will form on the counter and floor from the jacket and pants dripping off water.

A couple of weeks after the Toowoomba AGM, Easter Saturday I think, the day it rained so much they postponed the horse racing, we rode the Putty Road, and I was soaked to the skin.  The waterproof jacket ain't.

Let me explain.

This was the day Sydney got around 75mm to 100mm, they cancelled the races, we got wet, very wet, wet to the skin.  It was cold too, the ambient temperature (according the Mighty ST's temp gauge) it was around 60C to 80C.  I have ridden in heavy rain before, I have ridden in colder temps before, but the combination of rain and temp on this day was the worst I can remember since I started rising in 1972.

I was cold, miserable and grumpy.  Mrs W was colder, more miserable and grumpier (I think she somehow didn't appreciate that it was me that had the heated grips).

I should add, all was well around 15 minutes after we had arrived at the Big Trout Motel at Oberon.  Our excellent had the foresight to have our room pre-heated and provided an extra fan-heated ready for us, it was cold wet, and we knew you were on a motorcycle, and then a hot shower and a set of warm dry clothes.

I'll now digress but come back to the topic .......

In the '80's and '90's when I did motorcycle riding training for the RTA (VIC) and then VicRoads (hope I have not told this story before) a part of the training was about protective clothing, helmet, gloves, jackets, boots, pants, etc....  We would also mention protection from the elements, wind and rain (see, I'm getting back on topic).

We would often get comments like I've got good snow gear, it'll keep me warm and dry.   A response would be along the lines of, Yeah NOT!!  Try putting all your best snow, designer label, Euro made gear and helmet on, turn on the shower (hot, cold or warm water), stand/sit in the shower for around our hours (water would be cold by now), and see if you stay dry.

Whether Saaz, Streak, me or any of the others have stayed dry or wet in their OzSTOC jacket will or has depended on the how heavy and persistent the rain is, how many hours you are riding for riding, what your pillion is wearing (Mrs H had a Rivet jacket - around $400.00 ten years ago - and stayed as dry as me), and if you get the same good results "Good" for you, or bad results, hope for Oberon type hosts.

Now it's time to put all your gear on, and have a four hour shower.

I was in the Sydney and Brisbane deluges for a few days. You do eventually get wet regardless. I have had no luck with waterproof textile pants, but my old orange PVC ones work a treat (a bit sweaty if it is warm like the Brisbane rain). I suppose that is what being on a bike is like really...
