Title: importing a bike into Australia
Post by: spanner on July 09, 2015, 03:19:07 PM
I have a mate who is interested in going to the US for a month and wants to buy a bike over there for riding around on. He is looking at buying a second hand St1300 and was thinking about bringing it back here.

Does anyone know what the laws are regarding doing that?

is there an import tax if you buy outside of Australia and use it  and then bring it back to Australia?

I would personally think the shipping cost would be prohibitive but it is not my place to question that.

Looked into doing just that - very complicated and expensive not to mention the requirement of owning the bike for six months before being allowed to bring it into the country. All the paperwork has to be completed and authorised prior to it leaving the US otherwise you'll have a very expensive paperweight.
In my case it was easier and cheaper to just buy here.
There are a number of companies that specialise in importing bikes (usually HD's) - do a Google search.
Cheers,
A.

Well, the only advantage is that on a bike you won't have to change from left hand to right hand steering....

But jokes aside, it's not worth the effort.
