Title: Streak Has News...
Post by: Streak on July 22, 2015, 06:31:23 PM
Well Team,
Below is Day 1 of owning an ST Below back in 2011....

But 60,000km later, I have news, (a couple of people already know), but I am going to sell my ST1300 and downsize bike.

Between a bad knee, Teela getting her bike license, and the limited amount of riding i have been able to do of late, it is something that i have been thinking about for a couple of months now.

But I am not running away from OzSTOC or anything like that, you might just see me on a smaller set of wheels than the beautiful white bike that i have done some amazing kms on  :thumb

I have really enjoyed both my ST's, and proudly hand out cards to anyone with an ST or anyone wanting a sporters tourer they get and earful of ST from me!

i have come a long way in riding thanks to you all!

so keep an eye on the sell pages, i do know of one very Awesome White ST1300 that will be for sale, with lots of extras and goodies!

Cheers

I must say that I am very surprised, a little sad and yet I totally understand where you are coming from. The ST's are great machines and it would have been great if there was similar Honda options with the same jazz and appeal with differing engines and configurations. Sadly there isn't. I recently had to do a lot of sole searching in order to move on and although I have nearly (yet to sell the ST) I will have fond memories of the bike forever.
The main thing is that whilst the members may change steeds we still ride under the same banner and continue all the great work and achievements that is now entrenched in OzSTOC.
A.

Hey Streak, make sure you have a long hard think m about moving to a cross tourer especially if you have a leg complaint.

But a hard decision regarding the ST 300 as I myself search for my Goldie I'm not wanting to part with my blue ST as it's been with me for so long I don't want it to go and if I can convince the other half to keep it, but if it has to go then I'll can the Goldwing as I'm sure in my heart of Hearts I'll regret selling "Sabie"

You don't have to leave Honda to find a great bike- have a good look at the Crossrunner- still a V4, and great Honda engineering.
Will take panniers.  Only downside- chain drive, but then so is a VSTROM.  There's the Crosstourer, but it's still a biggish bike- V4 with shaft drive.

Can understand your problem if the knees are dodgy- all that weight needs reliable pins.

The seat height on the V Strom will rules that out... he isn't tall enough

All the best mate with this decision you make.
Do I ! Don't I !
But remember you will always have someone around to go and have a ride with whether it be DDR OzSTOC or anyone who is available
I am hoping it is quite a few years before I have to make that decision

Thats why i am spending the time to take all that off and put all the stock gear back on  :beer

I am really out to school on bikes atm, i think i will sell the ST, and then go exploring my options, hence why cruisers came up, i can still have the bigger motor, and have a nice big comfy seat to go with...

Mrs Sabie doesn't ride it as she feels there's too much traffic down here on the sunny coast.

Got to agree with that SaaZ.

Another one you really should throw a leg over Streak is the 2015 Versys 1000. Brilliant mid size touring unit. I would have one  today without any hesitation.

Streak, as I've said to you privately, my initial reaction was shock and disappointment that you are considering selling your ST.   I do understand that static weight can be a problem and from time to time when my back is dicky, I consider what would be an appropriate alternative.   However, once I'm on the road or in the groove and touring, I know why I love my ST and feel so much at home in the saddle.

At the end of the day, everything has it's season, and if it's time for your ST to be traded for another style of bike, then so be it, and what is certain is that you will continue to love your motorcycling.   Whatever you turn up on, you will always be a valued member of OzSTOC.

One member from the Redlands Ulysses had an 09 ST13 sold it for a 2010 Gwing then only after a split with his wife did he sell the wing and bought the Suz 650 ......loves it.
As you eluded in an earlier post you will have fun test riding what the market has on offer.Cheers Brian

hey Streak... a riding friend of mine recently had cause to make a similar decision... whilst loaded down with panniers, top box & pillion, his GTR1400 toppled over in a gravel carpark, injuring his pillion...

he said it was like having to put down your pet because it bit you....

but he traded his beloved GTR for a Triumph 1050 Sprint GT... which he now raves about - fairing, panniers, top box, gel seat, heated grips, 12v outlets, 6-speed, etc... just for your consideration.

Thank you for all the replies everyone, I have a budget of about 5-6 grand at the moment so i am a little unsure of what to go for, I am starting with the 650 V-Strom as it has been most highly recommended so far.

But i am open to any and all ideas....

I dont really want to sell the ST1300, but i am getting lots of hints to do it, i hurt my knee again this morning getting it out of the bike shed for a roadworthy.....  :||||

OzSTOC is still my heart and soul, always will be, I have far to many friends to hide anywhere....

Left knee unfortunately is not at the stage of rebuild (have been to the specialist), it is just showing signs of 20 years of rugby, and 10 years of mixed netball, just needs to be managed a little.

Bike is getting a roadworthy today, so Sunday is going to be spent taking all the gold off and putting all the stock pegs back on in readiness to sell

Streak, I've had to make the same sort of decision myself, driven by having to sell the ST1100 when I moved back to NZ in April.

I pick up my 2012 Suzuki Boulevard M50 tomorrow morning.  I chose the M50 because I didn't want a classic HD wannabe cruiser (I hate the ducks arse mudguards on the C50, and I wanted the instruments up on the handle bar and shaft drive) and it's a mid-size cruiser that I can place my feet down flat on the ground and also handle the weight.  I had one before coming to OZ and buying the ST1100, and I've gone back.  Got a good deal, it comes with a screen and saddlebags, I'll be putting on a luggage rack and a trunk/tail box with the wrap around padding for the perfect pillion.

But I'll never be able to get a bike which matches the value and performance for money that the ST1100 offered, as well as the mechanical reliability - my bike ended up with 150,000 km on it and was running as sweet as.

Be interested in your opinions as in a similar situation of wanting something lighter for doing the long rides (maybe Perth next years rally). But it always comes back to the ST as being the ideal combination of power, speed, handling and comfort, just a bit heavy.

Well i took a 2010 DL650 V-Strom for a ride today, covered 195km of rain, wind, sunshine, Sealed and a little gravel

THE GOOD

80 odd kg lighter then the ST1300
Suspension performed really well as a single rider
Standard seat suprisingly comfortable
More protection than I thought in the elements even in the rain I didnt get soaked (although legs and arms was wet)
Adjustable screen (although by hand)
Bike is bigger than i had imagined, so it still had road presence.
With the bark busters on it the heated handgrips worked a treat
Teela and I have about the same amount of pillion room as we did on the ST1100 (just means we cant put on weight)

THE BAD

With the smaller bike i wore more wind than i am used to, and with that more wind.
I did miss my electric screen.....lots....
I am still to find out who it would handle with panniers and top box on.
It does not have the road presence of my White 1300, it is nice when people give you space.
i think the highway handling of the ST1300 is smoother, but that is part of the heavier bike built for big miles.

SUMMARY

I had to really think of the good and bads with this bike as i really suprised on how well it handled.

First time i got on it i went to swing it upright like the ST1300 i nearly threw it into the street as it was so much lighter!

I immediately went to adjust the screen and remembered it was by hand and missed having my electric screen straight away, rising position is very upright and the stock seat put you in an excellent postion.

It is very nimble around town, once I hit the highway following Teela i was pleasantly suprised as i thought i would be hammered by the wind, but with the bark busters, fairing and screen it was 70-80% on what the ST1300 is.

Once we hit the rain and cold wind i got wet but was still bearable, the heated handgrips and barkbusters got a 10 out of 10 rating at this point.

Not to much water came in around the screen unlike I thought it would.

Watching Deisel, Saaz, PC, and ST2UP having fun putting it on the centre stand was a good laugh.

The ride home in the sun after we had dried out was the fun part, has decent power and it flows in and out of the twistes nicely, i felt comfortable and really enjoyed the experience.

I think i will be making an offer on the bike, as i am really pleased with it.

Cheers

Streak

It was a nice bike indeed.....and light  :eek with just a little coaching on technique Pockey could seriously put the Wee on its centre stand with ease.... :like

With just a little more protection around the radiator and headers and semi endure tyres it would be a great little 80% sealed road 20% fire trail scooter.....very impressed here  :thumb

Commute, Light Off-road through to LD......it ticks lots of boxes.

Pockey's brother went from a GL1800 and 2 up to solo on a Wee 650 and loves it  :thumbsup

I had a Wee-Strom for a couple of years before my ST.  Mine was the ABS model. Worth the extra $500 I reckon.

I loved that bike - and I farkled it almost to financial ruin. I would still have it except I only permit myself one bike at a time. House rules (however my wife has two pianos - and I have pointed out that that's not fair without there being any suggestion of compromise).

The best farkle was the Madstad brackets to make the wind-shield easily adjustable. Also a Givi screen, quite a bit wider than stock. The genuine hand guards were also great and they aren't an expensive addition. Givi luggage looks good - I had one 36 litre and two 45 litre cases (right side = 36 because the pipe is on that side). Add a fenda extenda to protect the front pipe, maybe a bash plate, some engine protection bars, handlebar risers, GPS and possibly a cruise control and you too may be in the poor house, if not in the dog house.

Would I do it again? would I ever! The only drawback, as far as I am concerned, is the lack of a shaft drive.

Title: Re: Streak Has News...
Post by: Streak on July 31, 2015, 03:02:22 PM
Well i have had another test ride today on the V-Strom, just another hours worth of riding in the sun, hills and twistys.

I am finally starting to get a feel for the V-Strom, being so much lighter in the front end, i have had to adjust how i corner a little as it tips in and out a bit quicker.

I am really starting to see why it appeals to the FarRiders/IBA people, as it has an excellent position, although i really do need a more touring style screen as this is a touch low for my liking

I have just clicked over 250km and i have used just over half a tank so the 400-450km looks like it is on the money.

power wise, there is a little vibration when you twist the throttle from low speeds, but in general 60km to 110km is smooth, which is different to the ST1300 as it is smooth right through. But i am happy, you dont really find a huge different in power, and i have never been one to need to warp drive anyway.

so at this stage the V-Strom has ticked all the right boxes so far, i am locked in negotiation with the owner about a buy price atm  :thumb

As good as the wee strom is, if you can afford it, the 2012 DL 650 is so much more refined.  I used to own a Dl1000 and thought the ergonomics where amongst the best of many motorcycles I've owned and ridden.  However, they are a budget motorcycle and have some vices, for me it was mainly suspension and wind buffeting issues which can be improved.  Even though they are mainly a road bike it opened up a lot of dirt road options for me which I enjoy.

I test rode a 2012 DL 650 when they were first released and was very impressed with it.  Engine was super smooth and felt more like an 800 than a 650.  Ergos, for me, felt better.  The suspension felt much better than the earlier generation with nicer handling to go with it.  Besides ABS there were few nice touches like a digital instrument display which was easy to read and included a gear indicator.  If I didn't do as much 2 up as I do I would have been tempted.

Either way, I don't think you'll go to far wrong with a DL.  Cheap and fun
