Title: Planning a Ride....ideas
Post by: Streak on July 29, 2015, 11:55:32 AM
Hi Team,
I am planning a fun little ride on the V-Strom for later in the year with a couple of mates (all tar, no dirt) to go and look at Ayres Rock, myself on V-Strom, 1 mate on a ST1300, and another on a Boulevard

It is going to be about a 6,500km round trip, which we are planning on doing over 2 weeks

Has anyone got good feedback for places to stay (we camp alot) and things to see along the way? such as the stockmans hall of fame, the mad max museum, and of course the big rock itself

Just a couple.

We sort of went to Ayer's Rock ages ago but it was the middle of summer (no choice). We camped four nights at Erldunda (Roadhouse at turn off) and did the resort one day and up to Alice another day and a rest day before heading back south. http://erldundaroadhouse.com/ (http://erldundaroadhouse.com/)

Coober Pedy and check out some of the Opal related stuff. https://www.cooberpedy.sa.gov.au/tourism#.VbhNMdgw-Uk (https://www.cooberpedy.sa.gov.au/tourism#.VbhNMdgw-Uk)

and then there's the space related museum at Woomera http://www.southaustralia.com/info.aspx?id=9002322 (http://www.southaustralia.com/info.aspx?id=9002322)

At home in Peterborough we have Steamtown http://www.steamtown.com.au/index.php?id=1 (http://www.steamtown.com.au/index.php?id=1) and the motorcycle museum  http://www.pbmcm.com/ (http://www.pbmcm.com/)

Tennant Creek
The Outback Caravan Park is a little out of town, and has a shop and it's own outdoor bar.  I've stayed there several times.

Coober Pedy
Stuart Range Caravan Park is the only one that you would want to stay in.  It has one of the best camp kitchens I've ever seen.    The on-site Pizza Restaraunt is an absolute must.   Plenty to see and do around Coober Pedy, so go nuts on Google.   Bring home some opal for the girls.

Alice Springs
Ride out to Tyler Pass at the end of the West McDonald Ranges and have lunch at Glen Helen and explore the gorge.   Stop and explore Ormiston Gorge (Camping is available) and Elery Creek Big Hole.   Other attractions include the Old Telegraph Station, RFDS HQ, Desert Park, Truckies Hall of Fame etc.  You can search Google as good as I can, but I've seen the stuff listed.

Flinders Ranges
Ride Horrocks Pass, Germein Gorge and Pich Richi Pass to Quorn.
Spend some time in Melrose, with its local museum and walks up Mt Remarkable.

Doesn't get properly wet until December, just bloody hot and humid.  Even then, December usually only sees isolated storms. :H

By all means go to Uluru, but make sure you also go to King's Canyon as well (it'll be another day ) and go on the early morning long walk around the top. There is a camp ground at the resort.

I used to drive coaches there and King's Canyon was my favourite place.
