Title: Who Smokes?
Post by: Whizz on March 08, 2012, 06:50:11 PM
Just out of plain nosiness, who smokes (tobacco, not 'other' stuff)?

Did you smoke and have quit, or have you never smoked.?

If you smoke, why?

If you don't smoke, why not?

I'll start.
I started smoking at the age of 12 and quit when I was 40. By the time I quit I was getting through 60 a day sand my missus was up to 40 a day. My missus and I both saw the light and quit together, with surprisingly little difficulty. We were working in the Middle East at the time where cigarettes were about $3 a carton, but still we managed to give them up. I must say that I still think that was one of the greatest achievements of my life, and I don't think I have ever felt better. I try not to pontificate about smoking but honestly I look back and think to myself what I prat I was.

That said I should thank my lucky stars that I started when I did. You've heard the saying that smoking stunts your growth, well I'm 6' 3" (188cm)...just think how tall I'd be if I hadn't taken up smoking!!!

Well I did smoke, but only a pack of 25 every two days and when the price hit $3.00 a packet I decided it was to much. I beleive Keating was still either treasurer or PM at the time. Giving up smoking is was easy compared to giving up caffeine.

I voted for never having smoked on the basis that a few at school didn't count. Really had better things to do with my money and the taste and smell put me off. At one stage I was supervising a large workshop in which one section was a fabshop, still remember sitting in a meeting with the boilermakers, most of whom were smoking while they complained about the welding fumes  :crazy

I have never smoked. I saw my father cough his heart up every morning until he gave up at about 70 and lived another 15 years. 8)

I started at 15 & smoked right through until 2002, until one day I lit one up & thought this is horrible I don't want to do this any more, so I threw them away and have not touched them since. apart from half a smoke the day my mum was involved in a fatal accident, which I don't even remember doing.

these days the smell of a smoker just makes me want to gag. and to think I used to smell just like that.

Jeez, Tipsy, 22 operations? are you the guinea pig that new surgeons practice on???

I do know what you mean about the smell of cigarette smoke, and completely agree. I reckon I can smell someone smoking in a car on the road three cars in front of me whilst we are moving, and it stinks!!!

What scares me is that the latest statistics seem to indicate that there are now more teenage girls smoking than teenage boys! How can they possibly think that smelling like an ashtray makes them attractive to anyone?? Beats me!

Had a few at high school behind the toilets, and smoked three in a row the night my wife left, but I am not a smoker. Watched my dad, uncle and now my older brother die from lung cancer, that is enough to put anybody off. :(  I too can smell the smoke when riding along. Have you ever bought a second hand car from a smoker? It takes years for the smell to go no matter how many times you wash the interior. >:(  Give it up boys while you still can, and don't regret the past, look to the clean smelling future.  :thumbsup
Whizz, its not smelling like an ashtray that makes teenage girls attractive to teenage boys!   :wink1

Most smokers who give up tend to eat more and some would gain weight if like me they don't do the exorcise thing. Simply it's giving up one habit for another. So the younger girls (not all) see smoking as a diet control thing. They eat less and don't put the weight on. Or so the theory goes.

I started smoking when I was 15,   :fp  Stopped when Winfield 25s hit $5 a pack, was smoking 2 packs a day.   :well
I put $10 a day in a tin till I had enough aside for another bike, a nice secondhand XS1100 RH  :runyay
If I did the same thing now with the cost of smokes so high it would only take less than 6mths to buy a good ST1100 or less than a year for a ST1300   :hatwave

Hey Mitch, that really puts it in perspective, just how much of a waste of money it is sticking a weed in your mouth and setting fire to it. Great comparison!.

I started smoking at about 13 on the train going to school. Got serious when I started work at 15 buying a packet of 10 Capstan cork tip at the station on the way to work everyday. Pretty soon up to a pack of 20 Rothmans filter a day raising to two packs on Fridays when we went to the pub and got sloshed. Gave up when I was 35 when I asked Ros to marry me. She said yeh sure! as long as you quit smoking.  :) No contest, easy choice really. Had a heart attack when I was 54. Cardiologist said the damage was probably done when I was smoking. Goes to show hey. Hate the things now and can't even stand the smell. Good as gold now. Aside from marrying Ros, giving up smoking was one of the best things I ever did.
Here endeth the lesson  :law
