Grafton/Armidale road
« on: November 07, 2015, 12:54:47 PM »
Hi all
Has anyone ridden the Grafton/Nymboida/Ebor/Armidale road recently? Is it in good shape?

We ride/drive the road a few times a year as its one of the couple of ways we travel to the coast, it's a great bike road particularly East to West, there where roadworks just to the West of Nymboida a few weeks ago that where untidy for about 1km....

The twisties are fantastic, but be aware of log trucks coming out in the pine forest area between Nymboida and Billy's Crk.....and if in the dark the black angus cattle like the sides of the roadway in the Pine forest section too  :eek Check out Fuss Pots Cafe in Ebor.  :thumb The road from Ebor to Armidale is all good.

Chris
Thanks for the info. I will be heading up that way next week. My usual route is via the Gwyder, but it looks like the Ebor rd might make a nice change. Probably a good rd to give the new VFR a run by the look of it

Have driven / ridden that road a few times over the years.  First drives were in the '80's, then it was mostly gravel and corrugated, shook the family wagon that much the under-dash cassette player fell onto Mrs W's feet, wasn't very impressed.

Recent rides were on the way home from the 2013 Ulysses AGM at Maryborough QLD, and on the way to the 2015 OzSTOC AGM at Toowoomba.  Earlier this year the road is very good, wide formation, well cambered corners and well maintained.  There were a few large potholes (nothing to worry about if you are travelling at under 110km/h), not much traffic, didn't notice any timber trucks.

If you have time, you could do worse than visit the Museum of Interesting Things at Nymboida - allow at least an hour, more if you can spare the time.  It was open in 2013, but not earlier this year - so I'd call before if you are interested.

To whet the appetite, here's a bit more:

Must've been an important to provide a decent coach service between Grafton and Armidale.

+1 on Chris's view of that road.  I rode it in the other direction as part of an SS1600K mid September on my Super Tenere.  Memorial Ride in memory of my Grandfather http://wombattler.com/2015-iba-memorial-ride-ss1600k/
Grafton - Ebor is a a bit narrow and bumpy in places but the fun factor is there in bags  :wink1.  Some nice little towns too. Ebor to Armidale is scenic enough, a nice easy ride good surface with a few corners here and there to keep you on your toes.
