Help me out fellas...
« on: March 23, 2017, 04:05:05 PM »
ok, long story..bear with me.
ive owned my 1995 ST for nearly twenty years. Since buying a new VFR 18 months ago it has sat unloved and mostly unused in the shed.Prior to buying the Viffer I got all enthusiastic and spent a bucket load of money on new parts, and regoed it again in NSW.
After putting 12 months rego on it, i discovered two oil leaks, one from the alternator, one some where from the front, either the clutch cover or the crankshaft seal, got fed up, pulled it apart again, let the rego lapse then walked away from it.
After retiring from a lifetime of working on motor vehicles, and teaching others to work on motor vehicles, ive come to the conclusion that I now hate working on motor vehicles...so no more work will be done on the old girl.
So, I am going to sell it unregisterd, as a parts bike...fixer upper.
I can either re assemble it, so a buyer gets a complete bike, or leave it in bits. whats the best option?. In either case it wont have rego and will need to be trailered from my home near lismore nsw.
Whats it worth?is there a market for the old girl?
The good..the following new parts were fitted...
Front rotors and pads
Timing belt
Radiator...after market
Oil and filter
Fork seals and oil
Carbs balanced
New paint..my own brew of candy red...i was a painter by trade..
Seat recovered with original vinyl.
and a few other bits ive forgotten about....

The bad..
its done 230,000ks, although the motor is tight and has no rattles and was fastidiously maintained until I ran out of steam...
Some of the lugs are broken on the plastics, but it all still fits together well.
There are some bits that wont go with the bike, to be disposed of seperately...MC Cruise control, and pillion peg extensions..

So whadda ya reckon?
Laurie

There are 19 ST1100s for sale on Bikesales alone, all with less (most a lot less) kays than yours.
I'd say it owes you nothing.  You're already looking at parting it out with the CC removed, for example.
You might shift the good parts you mentioned, but it sounds as if the plastic isn't much chop.
It sounds like you're well and truly over fixing it up.  No point in prolonging the misery.
Offer the engine for sale on Gumtree for an enthusiast to put in a go kart or something (a boat even?)
If it doesn't get a taker, donate the engine to a TAFE for teaching purposes- a High School even- I gave my old chainsaw to a grateful Tech teacher.  I know TAFEs run m/c maintenance courses- why not give them the whole bike!?
Then go enjoy your Viffer for the next 20 years, knowing your old faithful is still helping someone.    :grin

Rereading your original question... $1500 - $2000.  There just might be someone out there wanting a unique bright red sports tourer who is prepared to tolerate a bit of age in their machinery.
Greencan?  You love old STs.  Sounds like its mechanics are in better nick than that one doing all the yacking on the Forum!  :thumbs

For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

I would be interested in collecting the bike as is in my truck. I have a 98ST that still needs some TLC. Would happily utilize the better parts from both bikes to keep the "old" dears living on. What is your price?

Cheers,
Hobs

...eh, no on both counts. Firstly, my bike with the current need for disclosure actually goes and all that's needed to participate in another lap of Oz (if were so desired), is many tanks of petrol. And secondly, why would one want to invest in a bike that, on the surface, given the suggested valuations offered to Laurie, isnt worth a cracker.  :-[

I have made mention of this before in another thread, I know of a 1990 1100, which does need mechanical work, was purchase for $290, thats all. Now there in lies the paradox for moi, insomuch I believe the 1100 is a comfy and very reliable tourer, for which parts can still be easily procurred, yet value wise, is a dud. Interestingly too is the bike the 1100 was concieved to compete with, the K100 BMW will still command a higher resale price than an 1100 of the same year. Why? Praps the 1100 has still to find its place in history, I dont know.

What I do know is, my original 1984 Kawasaki GT750 P3, a bike built for the same purpose as the ST1100, is more sought after and in dollars terms, thus far better value for money than either of my 1100's I own. And both these 1100's are fitted with the post 1996 Honda ST1100 improvements.

Perhaps, Laurie would it be best if we got engine weeps sorted and got it back to a reliable running concern? Or consider Hobs's offer and do a Baz, n just move on. What say you?

As for moi...I am presently considering a 1940 HEC power cycle I have been offered...  ;-*

Just a thought, or 2...the can :-)
