SA Adelaide HIlls Fires
« on: December 23, 2019, 09:48:21 AM »
The fires in the Adelaide hills have been quite bad, and as of this morning, one life has been lost, 86 homes gone, as well as around 500 sheds and out buildings.   We are OK where we are (the blue diamond on the map), but Shillas is much closer to the action.

The cross hatch area on the map is what has been burned, and the yellow area are the zones under threat.

What we are facing is nothing compared to the devestating fires in NSW.

Hopefully the same can be said for Shillas...

Thinking of all those who have been affected and under threat at this time. Stay safe.

All OK my end, luckily the wind direction kept it away, just a few embers. It was extremely luck that the small town of Brukunga didn't go up, the fire burnt right to the edge, but I know a few people outside the town who lost sheds, their house etc.

Estimations are that a third of the Hills wine grapes have gone, including some wineries who've lost their entire vineyards and production.

Sandra took the dog and left early in the day, her first experience of bushfire of that scale.

The first photo is taken from the front of my house as I was filling gutters and wetting everything down. The second is pinched from a Facebook post showing the fire on Friday night.

When I first learned of this my thoughts were you and also my friends who run the Pomegranate Cottage in Birdwood.

There's actually a fire close to & just east of Birdwood at the moment, plus a number to the south.  Quite a few flare ups occurring this afternoon.

My brother at Mt Barker has had a near miss as well. Fortunately the wind changed direction.

Scary stuff isn’t  it. Glad you guys are ok. In another life I had to deal with fire on Ash Wednesday and there is not much in the world more powerful or  scary.
Many thanks to the volunteers  dealing with these  fires. You are doing an awesome job in what can only  be described as the very worst of conditions.
