RAM Universal Mount and iphone setup
« on: March 13, 2013, 07:46:39 PM »
Having decided to use my phone for GPS I needed a good way to mount it. RAM X grip is a universal gadget holder that performs wonderfully. This is my choice for mounting my Iphone.  Next to no vibration and no hope of losing my device. Although this was reasonably cheap I also purchased RAMs locking adjuster knob. It is much larger than the stock pieces but is a great way of keeping my X grip secure. As for waterproofing my phone. I thought I had found the perfect case. Lifeproof make a great case that adds little bulk to the phone and keeps it watertight. So much in fact that the company markets this case as suitable for swimming. For me this seemed the perfect case for everyday use however my bubble burst when I found than when using the phone normally I could not be heard by the other person. Otherwise works fantastic using a bluetooth setup. Waiting on the company to provide a replacement however this appears to be a known issue among phone cases that are sealed like this one. Currently sticking with Griffin Survivor. Not waterproof but otherwise resistant. Will wait and see what happens. I am likely going to fork out and purchase navigon for my GPS. While not needing nav capability right now I found a good free app called Awesome HUD that is a digital speedo. Is a little slow to pickup but otherwise good to stop me looking down so much on the 1100. Has an overspeed alert and allows iPod control within the app which is good. Also can customise the display to make it easier to see in the bright light of day. Just need to wire in my USB charger to power the phone now. Can anyone tell me if navigon has a dedicated speedo screen when not using the nav functions like some garmin devices?

Hmm I am not sure with navigon, I just turn it on with no destination and it has the speed notification at the top

I have a funny issue with Lifeproof case aswell.....has that awfull echo etc when I talk to a mate with a lifeproof case on his phone.....but I have no issue when talking to Mrs ST2UP with her lifeproof on her phone......so it must be my mates that is at fault, although he tells me it's only my pone he ever has a issue with.

Another program you may be interested in for kicks is Motor Dash.  It shows you the actual angles you lean when cornering as well as your speed.  gRide is another that will tell you the acceleration gForces when you ride to see if you have a smooth acceleration and whether you keep a constant throttle application.

I looked at Navigon, and a few others (Whereis, NavFree etc), but still keep going back to the paid TomTom that I purchased some years ago on the iPhone 3G.  I also used Navigon on smart phones years ago and found it wasn't really that intuitive for me after having used TomTom & Garmin.  My personal opinion, but some blokes probably enjoy it.
