pinlock visor
« on: June 10, 2013, 06:48:47 AM »
Over time I have used most anti fogging products. None with any great success. I had read some good reports about the Pinlock visor insert. Googling it found no bad reports, all said it simply worked.  My Shoei comes Pinlock ready, thinking that must be a good recommendation I ordered one from Bikebiz in Sydney. Package arrived and there was the fine print: Not to be used at night as it let in less than 80% of light. Googled  Pinlock night and there were many posts across a few forums. Most said there was some star burst effect from on coming head lights. A couple did not like it all. Most said one got used to it and it was no longer a distraction. There being no appreciable loss of vision.
So I inserted the Pinlock and left for work at 430 as usual. I do an hour each way to work, mostly in the dark in winter. I live on the north coast of NSW. Temp rarely below 10. Big storms at times.
There was no fogging, none, I repeat none. Even with the visor down when stopped. I did not notice any loss of vision. On coming head lights and street lights did have some star burst effect. I did not notice it after the second day. Oncoming high beam was still annoying but no more so than usual.
Ran into a big storm the other  night. No need to crack the visor at lights or in traffic. Keep it tight all the time as directions suggest. I was able to up the pace a bit on the motorway because I could simply see better. Did not notice the oncoming traffic.
Directions mention the insert becoming saturated when subjected to  long wet periods, and the need to dry it out. After an hour in heavy rain there was no difference. So I do not know how it would go over longer runs.
I am pleased, something which really works. $58 delivered is pricy but now I think it is money well spent. Will not deliver to PO boxes.

Can't agree more. I recently bought a Shoei GT Air which fortunately came with the pinlock. Like you I leave for work early and have found the pinlock to be exceptional. I doubt that I will ever buy a helmet without this again. Even when you try to fog the visor, the best I can manage is a small amount of fogging directly around the nose area, but it is only about 3 – 4 mm and goes away very quickly. I have ridden a couple of times at night and had no bad effects. The only thing to really get use to is the line on the visor at the edge of the pinlock insert. And you don’t notice that after a day or two. I would highly recommend this to anyone considering a new lid or even purchasing the pinlock fitted visor.

Nice review Paul - I've got the capability in my Shoei TZX but have been too lazy to check it out. Given your post though... an order will be placed tonight when I get home. Cheers!  :hatwave

Yep, can't agree more fellas. I also have just bought the Shoei GT Air with pin lock insert. I bought the bike from Melbourne so decided to ride it home to SW Sydney. It was overcast and/or rainy on both the Thurs and Fri. Not a hint of fog on the visor. Did get some on my glasses for a while but the venting looked after that once opened. Very effective. Also rode a couple of hours in the dark coming into Wodonga on the freeway. No problems at all. Vision good. A great system.
