Hi all

Just wondering what sort of range do people get on their st 1100

what sort of temp should the guage be showing mine hardly gets above the cold mark at 100 and fairly around 1/2 in town
could be the thermo playing up but just thought i would ask  also need to check the radiator for water i guess

Typically on an open road I would count on at least 450kms plus, but this can go down with head winds and if you are having a bit of fun :)

The temperature needle should sit a needles width or so above that first white mark. The fan should kick in a bit over half way up, but this can vary.  When I first got my ST11 it stayed too low, due to an old thermostat.  My radiator cap was also a bit old but still worked.  A classic overheating issue is the overflow hose cracking so that the radiator does not get refilled from the overflow tank (similar to many cars).

If in doubt, change the coolant, replace the radiator cap and thermostat and trim the end of the overflow hose and clamp it back on.

Standard specifications:

•   Thermostat opens 80-84c
•   Fully open 95c
•   Fans on 98-102c
•   Fans off 93-97c
•   Standard radiator cap 16 psi

Temp usually sits just above cold in this weather, and a little higher in summer unless caught in traffic. Then the fan should kick in at around 3/4.

Range!!

Depends whether in traffic or on the open road cruising at a steady 110ks.

My average calculated figures are 376Ks to reserve light, 458 expecting empty (havent gone empty yet)

Max expected range good cruising: 550 to reserve, 670 to empty
Min range, doing day to day stop start, accelerating  340 to reserve and 414 to empty.

These figures are taken from several years usage records using  23litres to reserve, and 28 Litres to empty. Most fuel that I have put in is 27.5 Litres (right to the top of the filler hole)

Dumb question i know

But i assume that there should be a pipe that goes to the bottom of the overflow for the radiator mine doesn't have one
new to all this as a stint of 25 years of the bikes but the old ute has one therefore the assusmepation (excuse spelling). not hard to make just checking thats all

The pipe from the radiator goes to the bottom of the collector tank, its hard to see. The pipe out the top is just the overflow vent.

The overflow hose on the ST11 is up on the neck of the radiator just below the radiator cap (you have to remove the right hand side pocket to get to it).  It is a straight forward overflow system (radiator cap on the radiator, overflow goes to overflow tank not under pressure), as opposed some car systems that have the overflow tank pressurized (ie the radiator cap is on the overflow tank)

The overflow tank then has a hose to vent any excess coolant onto the ground.

Just wondering what sort of range do people get on their st 1100

All depends on the lay of the land, your speed, wind conditions, if riding solo or two up and towing a trailer or not. So far this year average has been 17 kms/litre

The best I've had is 470 kms and 27.44 litres from Ceduna to Port Augusta ((had 10 litres spare fuel but not used) on my own and towing a trailer). The worst was riding two up and towing a trailer from Broken Hill to back home. Ran out of fuel after 357 kms. Fuel light failed to come on.

Have run to 525Km on a steady solo ride, two up drops to 430Km. Average around 470Km solo with a bit of enthusiasm. Temp gauge needle sits over the 'E' in temp unless stopped in traffic, fan cuts in at half way to H.
