Timely warning - Check Your Gear!
« on: October 16, 2013, 09:01:14 AM »
Got a flat tyre whilst out riding recently and went to repair it at the side of the road, only to find this.......    :eek :eek :eek

This is the remnants of the hard casing of my Slime Air Compressor!

It was supposed to look like this....

See how the carry bag is OK, but the hard casing has welded/melted itself to it?

This is not due to heat!        :-(((   ...... it is due to PETROL FUMES!

My spare 2 litre fuel can must have had a leak in the pannier bag and turned the petro-chemical based plastic into mush!

You can see that I still might be able to use it by keeping the metal guts (piston and motor), but it was basically useless to me at the side of the road.

Fortunately, I carry a few mini CO2 cylinders as well, and they got me enough air pressure to limp a short way to the Servo to finish the inflation.

I hadn't checked this gear for a while and was reminded abruptly to consistently eyeball your equipment (ESPECIALLY EMERGENCY RECOVERY EQUIPMENT AND FIRST AID KIT) every now and then.

Might look in to a foot pump like many of you carry.       :thumbs

Hope this helps, Villains.

Cheers, Diesel

Wow!  Just fumes can do that to your lovely Slime pump!  I'll have to have a look through my RH pannier, as I carry petrol too and can smell it whenever I open the pannier.  I know it made the plastic cover of my map book brittle.

Yeh right - We all know you old blokes carry fuel so when you havent been on the bike for a while and need a hit of fumes you can just open a pannier and suck those fumes in big time  :o :grin

Used to be better when I first got into it and we had leaded fuel!
Had to leave the NT when they brought in that Opel rubbish.

I'm really surprised that fumes alone would cause the plastic to go like that.  Amazing!
I usually carry 6 CO2 canisters and a tiny little manual pump to get me out of trouble.
Having said that, I've never had a puncture in 140,000km (I'll probably get one tomorrow now)

Not a good look for these Slime pumps that were all the rage "must have" a year or so ago.
I can see now where they got their name.     :grin

Hi Sab - I had the pump in the pocket section of the pannier bag, and the fuel can in the main section of the pannier bag.
