bike stability
« on: January 03, 2014, 12:09:27 PM »
Just a question from you more experienced riders. Have been riding my ST1100 for just over a year. Have noticed a slight oil film around the front fork seals over the last couple of months. Hard to tell the amount of loss. Had the seals replaced by a reputable repaired last december, so was surprised to see the oil smear. My question is, what should I do about it, and is it a sign of a greater problem? Would loss of oil in the front forks create a handling, stability problem as the bike seems to be understeering when turning. What is the best way of testing that the dampening is working ok and is the oil loss due to overfilling or normal use. The oil leak is a film around the seal area which i wipe off every couple of weeks. Being new seals and fitted by an experienced mechanic, I wasn't expecting any leakage. The mechanic is in NSW and I am now working in SA, so paying him a visit is not an option. Some advice would be appreciated.

Here's a link to a product that is said to clean out any dirt or grit that finds it's way under the seal.    I'm told that a piece of film or negative can be cut into a similar shape to clear out any foreign body that interferes with the seal.    I add that I've never needed to do this on my bike.

Check your tubes. Any pitting spots on the chrome will wear on the seals leading to continual replacement.
