Rear Guards from GL1800

Found a pair of rear GL1800 Guards from a nice fella in Griffith who triked out his goldwing, $45 as new condition! 

Really don't want to test if they work, but I think it's nice to have the extra insurance against the casual parking - tip -  over or nasty gravel rash.

The R guard needs a bit of a squeeze to get the bottom bolt (40 mm x 10mm 4pc) installed and I will get it done later today.

So far it does not interfere with the opening of panniers at all. Seems ok when I sit on the back, but have not trialed with pillion rider, as never have oprotunity.

Nice job zevk.   I assume you will drill the frame to get the lower securing bolt in place, and perhaps you could lay the bike over on a flat bit of lawn to check clearances.

There is a thread on the st-owners site about the bars. And a lot cheaper then other "tip over bars".
Interesting to see that your pillion peg folds up still, I don't think it can with the others?? not that it is an issue with the bars fitted.

It appears the pillion peg folds up on the left side, and presumably will on the right.
Since the majority of pillions are women and children, with smaller feet, the loss of an inch at the back shouldn't be a problem.  I do know I sometimes clip my wife's foot but not sure when that is happening, e.g. whether she's moved her heel onto the peg.

DRILL the frame??!! heaven forbid!  just use a worm hose band and chain-visegrips to squeeze the gaurds 20 mm closer and the bottom bolt will fit thru.
Others have welded flat plates to relocate the holes, but I think it is a bit over engineered and a possible weak point with an additional weld...

Again, I can only hope these guards will be "ornamental" and never be tested....

I hope you never test them too, but for peace of mind, I had the MCL bars on mine, and I can say that if you do go for a slide down the road without hitting anything solid (like a car - ouch!), they will protect the panniers and rear of the bike, along with the front tipover bars, IF the bike slides without flipping, so lowish speeds. The back half of mine was untouched, except where the topbox hit me in the back and came off the mount.

The Goldwing bars look the goods, being chromed and all, but I'd really like to see them to check the angles out. I'll be bending my bent MCL bar back and maybe filling in the ground down bit first. The black over the mount area looks good too
