ST1300 grab rail reflectors
« on: February 25, 2014, 07:19:25 PM »
I have a small project happening and there is a bit of a snag.  The US versions have a red reflector on each side of the grab rail (well at least in some states it is a requirement).  I purchased the pieces from Honda except the reflectors as I am using orange ones that I already had.  You can see the parts here www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/2010/ST1300+A/GRAB+RAIL/parts.html

The snag is that the screw nunber 34 in the diagram has nothing to grab into under the rail where it should screw in.  There are two holes there but nothing for the screw.

Has anyone an idea either what should be there or what I could use in its place?

TJ189, what about using a "nutsert" into the hole, I have used these a bit and work great:-

I have the tool and bits and pieces if you are in Sydney one day.

It looks like it goes into item 15, collar nut.... probably one of those rubberised squash captive nuts. looks like you would need 4 of them. The collar probably pushes into the hole.

15 is a spacer that is required between the grab rail and the stay.  It keeps the stay level.

Thanks Abe.  The hole on the grab rail does not go all the way through, I an not sure these would work.  I was hoping something like Brock mentioned the rubberised squash captive nuts might be suitable.  would either of you know where to get those in varing size (off the top of your head)

Perhaps drill and tap the rail for the right sized helicoil inserts.

Looks like another tool to get!

If the holes that are there are not too big you could use a tap to make them into a threaded hole.  TJ, have you tried asking over on one of the US forums?  I am part of at least 2 that would gets answers back pretty quickly.

Great tool but the one I got wasn't cheap.
This is also a great way of having a thread in box sections etc.

Notice no material removed. I have seen a demo of this, just amazing.
Apologies for hijacking the thread.

Impressive technology.
Also, very impressive video teaching technology, with those great aligned captions.
