Author Topic: Serviced ST1100 and Ready for Rally (Read 10145 times)

Got into the Bike today, pulled her apart and put her back together ready for Rally.

Checked over:

Coolant (perfect)

Tyre Pressures (thanks to advice from Brock I made both front and back 42 psi)

Lights (everything is working)

Changed the Oil and Oil Filter (for full instructions here is the link: http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=2377.0)

With the oil i did something different and went with the Penrite HPR30 20W-60 Deisel oil, and the Repco ROF135 Filter Total Cost was $46, i have read alot about how much quieter and smoother the bike seems to run using this type of oil so i thought i would give it a whirl.

i then ran a spanner/screwdriver/Alan key over the bike to make sure everything was nice and tight and good to go! so apart from fuel and packing i am good to roll!

Nice work Streak.

I took mine for a ride through the hills today, and have returned it to the STable with the cover on, as I won't get another ride for over a month now.

so to look at my coolant and adjust the shock i just drill a hole in the pannier?

Makes me glad I have the "A" model.......don't have to a major rebuild just to check the coolant.........lol

i didnt have to really, I just took everything off for a look over, as i am about to spend 2 weeks riding it around, so wanted to make sure everything is in A1 tip top condition, to check the coolant all i have to do is take the pannier off

I also ran the same oil this time and it makes a big difference!

Wish I could get the time off to come across for the rally, maybe next time.

Might be too late, but when I check the coolant I mark the cold level, get the bike up to operating temperature and check that the level goes up, then check it again when cold to make sure the level drops. Perhaps paranoid from having a leaking overflow hose and radiator cap not working 100% (and not only on the ST1100)

Is the oil a heavier grade ? And do you need a different from std filter to match the oil consistency?

Its a slightly heavier grade Brian, but not really different from auto 20W50. It has extra Zinc and other good stuff hor the harder working diesel engines,it has the effect of quieting the gear box and tappets. As its a harder wearing oil, its perfect for the STs inb heavy traffic and long runs. The oil lasts longer, so there is no increase in noise and the dreaded 1st to 2nd notchyness that the other oils exhibit. The standard filter (Repco ROF135 or Ryco equiv) are fine.

As we are going to Ballarat and there is always a good chance of snow there, is the 20W low enought for cold weather.

I know in WA the temp in winter is still pretty warm but I normally use a 10w rating.

Don't know a lot about the oil ratings but I have been told that the lower the first numbers (ie 5w, 10w etc) is matched to the cooler weather while the 2nd numbers match the higher ambient temps as per the log book recommendations.

Alas I have to to concede defeat this year, having the missus tag along to this years rally I have fitted new rear tyre,

No chance of getting the closest to cloth trophy this year.

20W 50 should be good, just let the bike warm up for a little while. In the Old days, all cars (probably bikes as well) used 30/40 oils, the nnWnn stuff came from the yank oil companies dictating to the world

Honda lists 20W50 as being good for ambient temperatures down to 0c (police supplement for the ST1100). Should be quite ok to use in March. I used it once closer to winter in Canberra, and it took a bit longer for the oil to warm up enough for the gear change to loosen up. On a trip I would have no problem using it, but not for winter commuting where it gets close to 0c.

I have seen oils advertised as low as 5 which give you an option to use the motor in extreme cold conditions and all the way up to 50 for the extreme hot conditions but they are too expensive for the rare times I have to use them.

10W-40/50/60 goes from -12c to over 40c. A 15W-40/50/60 will do -8c and up. As I don't park down the snowfields in winter no need for the 0W and 5W stuff which is popular in the US/canada and other REALLY cold places
