ST1100 Face Lift... or Just Wrong...
« on: April 01, 2014, 12:31:04 PM »
Hi Guys,

This maybe the wrong place to post this, and happy for it to be moved to its proper place if the Administrators see fit.

This may get me a bad rep even before I have met any of you guys, because you might consider this to be sacrilege to the whole body of the Honda ST1100, but because my bike is from 2000, I see the headlight lenses a little outdated and old fashioned and would like to know if there is after-market parts that you can get from somewhere in Australia that could upgrade the front of the bike to a little more modern, maybe a clear lens and then I would consider upgrading the actual lighting system itself.

I have to say I am not used to a bike that has an always on headlight that you cannot turn off, only turn to High Beam.

Has anyone done such a thing to their bike?  Any suggestions would be welcome... or your comments of it being a bad idea would not be welcome but I can take it...

If you guys might have suggestions of websites to visit that sell after-market add-ons for Honda's then please send them my way.

J

STray did a conversion on an ST1300 so worth checking the lighting section in the ST1300 area to see if a kit is available for the ST1100. I just checked and nothing listed for the ST1100.

The ST1100 has very average reflectors so any upgrade would be worthwhile.   I have tried HIDs but too much light scatter and better beam pattern with plus 100 halogen bulbs.  I went for better auxilliary lighting.

Any headlight of the right dimensions should fit.  An interesting project.

As Saaz said,  bulbs a good cheap place to start......use H4's and do the minor mod to the bulb to suit the Honda bulb holder. Have yet to see a a face lift option, but you could be the first to gut the ST1100 housing and replace with HID projector  WOW:

Pictures if ya do  :thumbsup

I was just thinking the same thing like replacing with some type of projector lighting using HID.

I remember seeing a naked ST1100 once on a form but can't seem to remember where.

More will be revealed I guess.

Regarding the "always on" aspect, that's a legal requirement, and I certainly would ride with headlights on even if it weren't mandatory.  Some folk add even brighter DRLs (Daylight Running Lights- the ones in the top corners).
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Totally agree with you.  I had a Suzuki 600 Sports Tourer back in the UK and I would always make a point of riding with my lights on.  I even got into the habit of at least having my side-lights on, on my car in the UK too which if people actually looked in the Highway Code (UK) it is also a legal requirement but it is never enforced.

I have noticed a lot of car drivers seem to drive around Sydney in the dark with no lights (how is that even possible).

The bike in the UK, you could actually control what lights were running, on the ST1100 Here I can't, not that it bothers me too much, I am seriously considering adding DRLs to the bike anyways.

I'm looking at the same kit from Retrofit Lab http://www.retrofitlab.com as they seem to be one of the better ones around and offer a decent service, quick replys to my questions and an honest price. I just have to make sure they will fit (need 12cm space in the housing) and then I'll do it.

Looking forward to improved lighting before I add the additional DRL's and spots.
