Apollonian RTE
« on: July 20, 2014, 09:37:12 PM »
I decided late saturday night at work to give sunday overtime the flick and go for a ride  :slvr13

After a few hours sleep i woke up,made some hastily arranged sunday night accommodation decisions, fluffed around aimlessly like the living dead then hit the road sans coffee.

Arriving at the meeting point i filled up the tank then found Gary,Skip,Skippy & a few more new faces.
I attempted conversation but made bugger all sense, forgetting names instantly ...the need for caffeine becoming urgent but just out of reach as the departure time came & went waiting for Mr & Mrs Diesel.

The assembled throng departed on the pre-arranged route which i briefly perused at sparrows fart before departing home, retaining no info whatsoever. Not long after leaving the highway approaching a T intersection, the dual corbin seat i swapped in the previous day for the corbin solo saddle/corbin smuggler set up came back to bite me in the arse. Looking right for oncoming traffic, the old grey ghost veered sharply to the left within a mere cm of running up over the gutter. In my haste putting the seat on saturday afternoon i dropped the front seat adjustment bar to the lowest point, resulting in relocating my ample frame to a lower forward position resulting in a very twitchy handling bike !

Upon reaching the edge cafe at montville,i adjusted my seat then walked in to find Sabie,Mrs & Mrs Ian B/Beatup and KiwiRoo. The coffee was great when it arrived - Rabbits having to get a refund due to his caffeine hit not arriving upon departure. The ride down through nambour and beyond was uneventful until my left pannier decided to play traffic bingo around north arm.I heard a dull thump then watched it cartwheel down the road behind me in my left mirror as the pack powered off into the distance unaware of the hilarity unfolding behind them.Pannier reattached wearing scars some time later found me at the end of the road with a decision to make - which way to go ? ..... up or over the highway ?

Google maps to the rescue !

I arrived at the lovely Apollonian pub, pulling up in front Shiney & Carrol standing in the car park.
Where is everyone else ? i blurted eloquently to bemused looks just as the lost riders rolled in behind me.
Every cloud has a scratched silver pannier lining it appears  :fp

The joint was jumping on a lovely sunday afternoon. The spit roast special is clearly a popular drawcard complete with barking dogs,a band playing on an old horse drawn wagon on the front lawn & topped off by some expensive harley's riding past the band as i departed.

Thanks to Gary for organising this ride.Mishaps aside or included an RTE is always a great adventure regardless of distance or destination.
Good to meet some new members.I may not remember your names but i do remember your faces and i look forward to seeing you again soon  ;-*

Harieg - hope all is well & at least 1 of your fleet is working  :grin
Photo's to follow when i get home ....

Aww, noice write up CK ...

Jokes aside, what a great day, fantastic ride and great to meet up with friends old and new.

Safe travels home tomorrow my friend, and keep the grey ghost all together in one piece as you head her nose towards home.

As a side note, could I suggest throwing a roll of duct tape into a pannier, preferably one that will stay on the bike .. Well, at least it's a colour match...

OMG ... :eek. Oh the humanity...

A plastic welding company should be able to smooth out the bumps and find someone who can respray. Talk to streak, he lost his top box a while ago, he may know of some repairs.

That's the first thing i thought of when i heard the dull thud - the top box  :cuss !
Luckily i put it back on correctly after changing the seat height.
Having said that - it would be cheaper to replace  :o

Sorry to hear someone else suffered separation anxiety from their pannier.
When it happened to me it was under similar circumstances.  I'd had the seat and pannier off during a ride and didn't mount the pannier correctly. The key item to watch is getting the groove in the front pannier moulding to straddle the casting in the bike frame.  If it's outside that then it can't seat properly up near the handle and will sit there until you're going fast enough for it to jump off.  I was doing around 80 when mine departed and I searched for a long time before finding it in the ditch on the opposite side of the road.
Every time I put mine on now I observe that front bottom attach point.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Well CK, a lot can be said for the strength of the pannier to survive that well.

I do know of a guy who is selling a red ST1300 with lower K's than yours, lives on a hill, goes out a lot at night but unfortunately has recently turned to the dark side (Barely Motorcycling Wonder).

Just saying..... :p

It was very pleasant to see so many "Blues" on the ride, in fact the Blues out numbered the Reds.

To my Townsville fellow OzSTOC riders of the red variety (which is just about all of them)... Nah nah ne nah nah  :nahnah I'm down here with my Blue Mates.. :blu13 :blu13 :blu13 :blu13 :blu13
