On the road again ...
« on: February 11, 2015, 08:46:41 AM »
After a fortnight off the road (I'm a slow worker!) Norma Jean is back on the road with glued, filled, sanded and repainted wing mirror covers which very nearly match the rest of her sleek body.

So the two of us went for an hour and a half tootle through the cane fields yesterday evening.  Lovely evening, it had rained earlier in the day and was still overcast so the temperature and humidity had dropped.  A nice south easterly breeze also helped make it a totally enjoyable experience.

After counting the number of Police cars at the Police station in Marion, full compliment, I was able to cruise at a slightly more enjoyable speed from Marion through to Eton on the Peak Downs Highway and back to town.

I tooted my horn a couple of times when I went around the corner of Branscombe Rd and Eungella Rd just out of Walkerston because I thought I caught a glimpse in the driveway of the house on the corner of a burgundy ST1300 belonging to Scarlet Thunderbolt which lives in Bakers Creek just to the south of Mackay.  (Not John's bike, but a burgundy ST1100 which I've seen over in North Mackay)

Lovely to be back on two wheels, even if the time away has been only a couple of weeks.

Great!  I am hoping to make the Eungella FarRide on 30 May so hope to have a better look around up there this time.

Pity, I'll have left the country by then.  Eungella is a great spot, but I don't like the actual ride up the front of the coastal range on a bike.  It's really steep and there's a number of iron grates across the road to help drainage, and I just cringe at the thought of what they'd be like if they were wet as they scare the crap out of me even when they're dry.

20 km or so down from Eungella on the Mackay-Eungella Rd is the town of Pinnacle, and the Pinnacle Pub does a great pie, chips and gravy.  Their pies are worth any trip, they're hot but the pastry has been formed up and crimped to the top like the old English pork pie.  Their pepper pie, best of the lot.

One ride I love is to turn off the Mackay-Eungella Rd from about a km inland of Marani/about ten km east of Pinnacle, turn north onto the Marani-Mt Ossa Rd and cut through maybe 35 km to the Bruce Highway at Mt Ossa.

Another great eatery is the Old Station tearooms on the Cape Hillsborough Rd.  You turn off the Bruce Highway towards the coast at The Leap (the Seaforth Rd) then just before Seaforth you turn right onto the Cape Hillsborough Rd and about 5 km along, on the left  just after the Balls Beach turnoff, there's the Old Station tearooms - great wood fired pizzas on the weekend but they only cook pizzas between 12.00 midday and 2.00 pm.  The pub lunches at The Leap Hotel are great too.

Or you could just go on up the Peak Downs Highway to Nebo (about 90 km from Mackay - about the same distance as Eungella is from Mackay) and have a burger sitting out on the verandah at the Nebo Pub.  There's a twisty road back down to Sarina back on the Bruce Highway from the other side of Nebo, or you can head inland for 30 km or so and turn south down the Beef Development Rd -I think the real name is the Fitzroy Development Rd, Highway 67 - and head south through Dingo and onto the Capricorn Highway.

I will copy and print out these suggestions.   :like  I will have some time to go up a bit further north, or just wander around the area before heading back.

I took note of some of that too.  FR East#17 to Eungella was my first FR.  We were warned about the eastern approach, so took it very carefully.  That's the town sign in my avatar.  It was a significant event in my riding career.
I'll probably go inland to avoid the wretched Bruce Hwy this time.
The week before is the Young FR, but I think I'll avoid heading south in late May.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

If staying overnight in Mackay, try a chinese meal at Sam's Hong Kong Restaurant, Wood St between Victoria St and River St.  Small Mum and Pop chinese eatery, they'll cook you whatever you want - I like Sezchwan beef and it wasn't on their menu but I ask for it and they cook it for me special.

Another great chinese is Hot Wok in McAllister St, the big sit down restaurant half way down a block not the little noodle place on the corner, garlic prawns are pretty good
