the generosity of country folk
« on: February 24, 2015, 04:30:40 AM »
Had an urgent request yesterday morning to pop up to mates place at Sandford (200 k round trip) to debug a home business computer of a friend that had contracted a ransomeware virus which demanded that he pay a fee within 72 hours, or risk losing all his data.
Had a quick look at fuel.... mmm .. about half full, enough to get there and back with a little in reserve for town use until next pension day.

Pretty hot day, I travelled in shirtsleeeves. When I arrived I was directed to park my bike in the shade of the fuel tank on the property.
I was told that they had called the local Indian computer guru regarding repairs, and he demanded a higher fee than the ransomeware?

Got into the operating system of computer by opening it in safe mode, and fiddled the registry to prevent the virus from initiating, then run a series of bug removal programs to eradicate it. Hot lunch supplied by host, and was finally completed with repairs in a little under two hours.  My time?... maybe ten or  fifteen minutes of keyboard to install and run hunter-gatherers...

All done, and a good meal to boot. Headed out the highway for home arriving around 2.30 pm. When I opened the left storage container to collect my phone, I discovered a pack of ciggies and a thank you note stating that they topped my tank while the bike was parked.
I may not have a lot of money, but I am rich in friends. Life doesn't get much better than this.

Your work you do on computers might not seem much to you but means a lot to them, I am lucky I have a computer mate just like you and he doesn't want much for helping out but I always thought him a few extra for his next holiday overseas  :thumb

Kev, I've had the privilege of working all over Australia in my former job as an Airborne Survey Systems Tech and your post doesn't suprise me at all but perhaps the most memorable was a few years ago working in WA. It was Easter, and we'd just finished a job working out of Meekatharra and had another one to do based out of Mount Magnet. Part of my job was to do the logistics including organising fuel for the aircraft and accommodation for the crew, so I arrived in Mount Magnet at about noon on Easter Monday. I called the local fuel agent and asked for ten 200litre drums of Avgas, fully expecting to be told that he would deliver on Tuesday. To my surprise, he told me that he'd meet me at the airport in half an hour and that he'd stop at the airport manager's place and pick up a gate key so that he could drop the drums off close to where the aircraft (a Cessna 210) could park.
He was as good as his word and even went so far as to organise access to the Skipper's terminal so that I could set up my data processing laptop. Thanks to these amazing folks, we were back in the air and on survey on the new job by 2pm.
You don't get cheerful service like that in the city on any day, let alone on Easter Monday. I love these people!
