My St breakdown
« on: May 10, 2015, 09:23:42 PM »
Got my ST back yesterday.
A bit more minor work required when parts arrive. (Rear wheel seals and bearings)

Two radiator hoses which vanish somewhere underneath the carbys to the motor.
One of had a 2” split, which instantly and un-noticed, drained the radiator rapidly.

As there was no coolant, sensors for the temp gauge and radiator fan did not operate
so I had no warning of overheating.

Standing at lights with no airflow, motor overheated, and on leaving the lights, engine
heat transfer affected the clutch slave cylinder seals, and the clutch plate delaminated.

Here’s the kicker..... the hose that blew was a YAMAHA branded part, obviously fitted by the previous owner.
Hose was considerably softer, and had been forced to fit the Honda engine,
by over- tensioning the hose clamps. (larger diameter hose than the fittings)

Replaced both hoses, replaced cush drive rubbers, clutch basket and plate, oil changed, Changed rear disc and pads.
carbys adjusted, replaced temp gauge sensor as it was non-operative, filled with new coolant
(temp gauge now operates, as does the fan temp sensor) New plugs fitted, general tune up.
Runs smooth and sweet. Did a run to Melbourne and back last night (750Km) arrived home again at 4 am this morning.
Rained most of the way and was almost freezing at Ballarat after midnight on the way home.
Pleased to be mobile again.

Hells bells Kev,
Sorry to hear she got so hot.  Glad that you did not experience any greater issues.  The clutch de-laminating was a bummer.  Anyway very glad she's mobile again and you got back home safe.  Cold but safe.

Forgot to mention... all mechanical parts except new hoses and new temp gauge sensor came from a '98 ST crash carcass which I purchased for $150

Glad to hear that you are mobile again, I think you are one lucky fellow that their was not more damage when the radiator hose went

You sure have been busy with that rebuild!
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

All repairs now completed, now I need a payday to fill the tank and go cruise again....
Short 200 Km shakedown trip planned for weekend at end of this month to check it all out.
