Don't you just hate it, when something on your bike breaks?
« on: April 07, 2015, 04:01:59 PM »
The lock/catch on my Rjay top box broke..... :think1

Piece of metal... aluminium?...scrap of old guttering?  :think1

AHA!... Milo tin lid!

Cut a strip, bent it to shape, cut a groove for tip of spring to lock into...

Wiggled broken part into budget tin piece..

Located new part into handle of catch to guesstimate final length...

Pushed hinge pins through to test integrity and operation of spring...

Looks ok, so fitted mounting plate which affixes the unit to the top box...

Off to  the workshop tomorrow morning to drill and fit 4 x pop rivets through the tin, and then a splash of black paint to finish the project.

So much easier than trying to find a replacement, or outlay mega $$$ for a whole new topbox?  :thumbsup

Will post further pics tomorrow when completed.

Wonder if it's the same as my old Rjays one gathering dust and cobwebs while it's sitting in the shed.

Awesome work going all MacGyver on that top box mate :thumbsup

MacGyver meaning
v. 1. To use ingenuity to fix or remedy a problem using only the tools available at hand. 2. To jury-rig

n. Someone who can regularly cobble together solutions to problems using only the tools available at hand.
Your CD playa broke, huh? Gimme that string, a pencil, and a sock, and I'm a MacGyver it.

Well done Kev. A milo tin is after all just one sort of sheet metal.  Some of those plastic repair epoxies are great. JB weld is my favourite, use for metal and just about anything. Usually stronger than the original material, and can be used in combination with other materials to form it into shape.. Jaycar has it.

Nearest Jaycar is 100 km away... either Mt Gambier, Hamilton, or Warrnambool... milo tin was in the kitchen  :grin

All ready to refit...

.... and back on the bike... just needs a quick mist with a can of spraypaint

I've seen pictures of the face, and I'd say the handyman skills are very important in that comparison.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Very unfair Biggles. I have met Kev in person, and as they say personality makes up for many things  :rofl

with respect to your handy work, I had the exact same thing happen to the RJay topbox as well. Guess what....You can purchase JUST the latch (special order ) from your RJay dealer for $26.00 with new key or transfer old lock over.

comes with screws and latch assembly. A known problem for a cheap box. I sold the box long ago.
